Not posting the link. We all know the song. We all know it’s Beatley.
Tears for Fears : Sowing the Seeds of Love
I will now go to work and ponder on the train which song from late period XTC fits best.
Don’t know how to post links, but Lies by The Knickerbockers could easily be shoved on a compilation of early Beatles tracks without the casual listener batting an eyelid.
Oh my goodness. This song instantly reminded me of another Bealtey song I love by the fake group The Wonders (initially The Oneders. Get it? Nobody did.)
Fantastic movie, and one of the best soundtracks, too (this song is by the Fountains Of Wayne) with a surprising amount of composing input from Tom Hanks.
I suppose if you’re being super pedantic, it’s only really the middle eight which fits the bill. But, having said that, very beatley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kPZr3c5KP0
Several on here. Always considered this as a sort of mirror image of Abbey Road, with the segued songs on side one, then Cries a belter in the She’s So Heavy mould. Also recorded at Abbey Road and produced by Hurricane Smith. One of the greatest ever LPs.
Left Banke
This one also belongs in the Emitt Rhodes “a bit more like solo McCartney than the Beatles” category but too good too leave out.
N.B. ignore first 44 seconds and storyline as they have nothing to do with the original recording.
(if the link doesn’t work can somebody please oblige 😉 Ta!)
Blimey! Is it a Rutles side project? Drumming is none more Bongo, too. Among the very few details I can find about this lot is that the singer/songwriter got pissed off at Beatles comparisons. Um…
On Spotify is an album called Inspired by Badfinger by Sleepy Hollow which ought to be called Inspired by Beatles. I assume it’s the same band. Other albums by Sleepy Hollow on Spotify must be by a different band altogether.
It’s an old psych-heads’ favourite. I had both albums on vinyl, y’know … the warmth of the analogue soundstage, the zen-like calm of the turntable ceremony … the continuous nagging irritation of surface noise …
I think all of XTC’s Apple Venus is incredibly “Beatley” but can’t pin it down to a particular year. 68 through to what they would’ve sounded like in 72 maybe?
Anyway, this one from Weller. The descending chord progression is incredibly Beatley. Possibly his best solo single.

And after much deliberation (or a very long train journey) I have decided that my answer is
XTC : Rook
XTC/Dukes – Collidescope.
Sounds very John Lennon although the chords are very Roy Wood.
I love this. Great find Ask.

I really enjoyed the movie too.

Must be time for some Beatles copyists. Oasis? Rutles? No…The Pleasers! On Crackerjack!
Utopia – I Just Want To Touch You
Obvious, still though…

None more Macca – Freiheit
Feels Like We Only Go Backwards – Tame Impala
It seems that Jeff Lynne unwittingly has penned several tunes that are a bit Beatley:
Submitted for your pleasure….

I suppose Bad Finger don’t count.
None more Macca than The Guthries
Neil Finn channelling his inner Lennon:

It’s Cold Outside – The Choir
Instantly thought of this. Noel Gallagher likes ’em (obviously).

Emitt Rhodes – She’s Such A Beauty
I suppose this might sound a bit more like solo McCartney than the Beatles, but, well, it’s in the right ballpark.
Bonzo Dog (Doo Dah) Band – Don’t Get Me Wrong
(OK, Viv’s vocal doesn’t stand up to Beatles-analysis, but the backing track 68/69 vintage Beatles)
One for Beany:
Stackridge – Dangerous Bacon
One for copyright lawyers:
10CC – Oh Donna
Another for Beany.
Not strictly Beatley, but with a touch of Lennon vocal, George slide and Paul pop sensibility, The Korgis If I Had You.

Beady Eye – The Roller
has a touch of “Instant Karma” about it.
Instant Karma was written in January 1970, before The Beatles were dissolved in the High Court, and featuring George Harrison on guitar – so it counts
Klaatu- Sub-Rosa Subway

I have said this before, but I think ELO’s “Mr blue sky” sounds like an extended version of PM’s middle section of “A day in the life”.
Nice work chaps – knew you wouldn’t let me down. This has the makings of a None More Beatley Spotify playlist in due course.

Teenage Fanclub have a few. Here’s their ‘Two of Us’
Say No

Lazy Smoke’s album has some tracks more Beatler than others.

Somebody recommended this on the old site years ago. Belated thanks whoever you were. I love this album.
