David Cameron is to address the National Security Council. He will open with this statement:
“For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens: as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone.”
All this under the guise of protecting “British Values”, whatever that means. See the link for more info.

Silly me I always thought that as long as I obeyed the law the government had no right to curtail my freedom. I also thought that that stance was a fundamental British value.
What a nation of frightened, inward looking, gutless sheep we are becoming.
Wheldrake says
It becomes even more chilling if you remove the word “passively”.
chiz says
That’s true. In the same way that several of the 10 Commandments become more chilling if you take the word ‘not’ out of them

As an aside to this I’ve just heard that our overlords are going to amend the Freedom of Information Act to make it easier for ministers to veto the release of Information.
FauxGeordie says
No doubt someone prat will be along in a minute to say its all nonsense and no British government would ever do anything unpleasant to its own pope (apart from miners, republicans and Liverpool fans) and we should stop shroud waving.
chiz says
Sorry, I got delayed… Of course it’s not all nonsense, and of course governments have been doing bad things to their people (and popes) throughout history. And I’m sure there’s nothing I can say that would convince you to stop shroud waving, so carry on, if you think it helps. How’s it working for you so far?
FauxGeordie says
People not pope. Is the editing thing not working then?
Bingo Little says
It’s a horrifying quote. But he then goes on to say:
“Freedom of speech. Freedom of worship. Democracy. The rule of law. Equal rights regardless of race, gender or sexuality.
“We must say to our citizens: this is what defines us as a society.”
Hard to see how preserving the rule of law is compatible with government powers which go beyond it.
FauxGeordie says
24% of the population voted Tory. A win albeit quite intentionally at the expense of the union with Scotland. They will be revenged on everyone else until their tiny majority is eroded in by elections. In other words – 92-97 but worse.
Twang says
One of the many things the Tories wanted to do in the last government which were blocked by the Lib Dems. You know, the ones everyone hated for “getting in bed with the Tories” etc etc. I suspect we are going to see a whole string of things the LDs blocked which can now be rolled out in an unfettered manner (snooper’s charter, etc). Brace yourselves.
