That’s very sad news.
I sort of remember him from Smash Hits, but really became familiar with his work when he launched Empire, which I’ve read faithfully since the first issue.
For one of the mag’s big anniversaries he did a retrospective piece about getting it off the ground and its early days. I’d never really thought about what it takes to launch a major magazine, but his article was eye-opening and very interesting. I admire anybody with the passion and expertise to helm two publications that were (SH) and are (Empire) leaders in their field.

He got to have some fun with a reunion album by his 1978-82 band Shock Treatment last year – and flew in from his home in Spain on two occasions thereafter to sing live with the band. The shows were great, the album’s great – the punk/pop album they never got to make back in the day, comprising almost entirely songs from that era that only existed as demos before.
