Okay lets gets the reason I was here out of the way first. I like Ms Streisand more as an actress than a singer. My wife loves her singing and since she is in her words ‘enduring’ Cambridge Folk Festival with me in August it was only fair I got tickets for one of her favourite singers. We got there halfway through the Kingdom Choir set I must have had my head under a rock because I didn’t know they sang at Meghan and Harry’s wedding – why would I come to think of it? They did a pretty decent version of the Coldplay ‘classic’ fix you and took away the histrionics that irritated me in the original. A couple of other half decent covers and they were not bad as a warm up act.
Then came Kris Kristofferson. What can I say? The artist with the best songs on this particular day had the worst voice by some distance. He had Merle Haggards band providing outstanding accompaniment throughout but his voice was shot to bits. A half decent Me and Bobby McGhee but a risible Sunday Morning coming down. Help me make it through the night was largely sung by the crowd. Shame but his live days are clearly over.
Bryan Ferry up next and he blew the lid off the place. Splendid guitar solos by Chris Spedding and sax solos by a Aussie girl by name of Jorja Chalmers who very nearly stole the show. The highlight for me was a splendid Is there something from their debut. For the rest of the audience we got all the crowd pleasers plus couple of deep cuts. He was in fine voice and his band kicked bottom.
Next up the Dive that is Barbra. For anyone interested she was wearing a Zandra Rhodes outfit that she took delight in pointing out. At 77 in truth she looked great but not sure if this is surgically assisted – one must assume that to be the case. Her voice was strong and in tune so blue for money!!
I didn’t like that she grouped a load of her hits into a medley, something that Carole King did at this same venue a couple of years back. Highlights for me were a very good version of Send in the Clowns and Second Hand Rose – there was a strange cover of Silent Night. Yes I know it is July – just humour her. Overall not bad and I enjoyed my day out especially for Mr Ferry.
Diva moment of the night – she brought her 3 dogs on stage vin a shopping trolley for the encore. Seriously WTF?
Open air concert audience – chatting throughout – a few pissed up ladies but the star of the day was the guy who threw up in the urinals. No doubt it was a dodgy prawn sandwich. Yeah right.
It made me think..
you can see she has star quality, of that there is no doubt. However Lady GaGa was better in Star is Born.
Didn’t need Kristofferson coming on stage for a duet, even Barbra seemed to think it was a mistake.
Lionel Ritchie nailed it when it was his turn.
