Firstly, the Mexican Morrissey covers project – a lyric video, sing along!
Dinosaur Jr. feat Jeff Tweedy
Calm down ladies
Happy 100th Birthday Frank!
For the keen Frankophile the glut of Sinatra Celebrations has been a mixed bag.
Tribute concerts? Frankenstein ‘specials’ with The Man on screen and dancers twirling to rat pack classics?
However, as previously noted here, the BBC4 doc was fabulous and so have the BBC2 docs that they have been broadcasting over the last couple of weeks. And there is the Voice On Air box set to look forward to in my stocking.
So, Happy Birthday to the best singer of the 20th Century.
Some early Frank
A new song about dogs
Not much more to say.
Good tune and videos of alt-country stars artists with their dogs
Mercury Prize Awards – live on BBC4
Just come upon this my accident.
So far lots of R6 – Lauren Laverne being sardonic, Gilles Peterson talking about ‘club culture’ – why do I hate R6?
Chris Stapleton
Chris Stapleton upset the bookies for this years CMA awards by winning best male as opposed to the Bro Country of Luke Bryan etc
His album is unreservedly recommended, this song one of many highlights – which he sang last minute with er, Justin Timberlake

Uber – the moral compass
What is the considered AW opinion on the Uber mini-cab app? I have just exited Bob Dylan at the RAH tired from dancing so hard and wanted to get a cab to Waterloo. One stab on Uber and within 30 secs my cab is here. The cost is less than half the cab and no tip – plus straight to my card.
Whats not to like?
I’m sure it can be misused but is it ‘ok’? Or is it the son of hades as it takes business away from qualified black cabs?
Highway 61 Doc
Anyone mentioned the BBC Radio ‘making of’ documentary by Andy Kershaw? The iPlayer has the R2 hour long version and of course you can now download it.
Just getting ready to not hear any of these songs tomorrow night
ATM – Selling Records
I’ve got a chunk of recently purchased vinyl to sell – of the new 180g modern day variety
Where is the best place to sell it? Ebay (which is a pain) or Discogs or somewhere else
Any help appreciated – need for Toy’s second album to find a new home etc
France, Merci Pour Le Musique Electronique
Very excited to get my copy of Jean-Michel Jarre’s Electronica Vol 1. this weekend.
What is it with the French and electronic music? From Air to Daft Punk to Justice to Roubaix there is gem after gem. Now, whilst J-M J himself is not one of my favourites (bit too dry and pompus in general) this new album sounds very promising – hey he collaborates with Air! (and as noted here, https://theafterword.co.uk/nicolas-godin-contrepoint/ Nicolas Godin’s solo album is fantastic).
Anyone got any buried treasures to share?
List time! “50 Best Hair Metal Albums”
Cough! Splutter! No Dr. Feelgood in the top 50?
Only No.20 for Love/Hate? Poison at no.2?
There are some truly terrible albums here – but also a smattering of good ‘uns.
Paint A Picture
Just listening to Nicolas Godin’s Contrepoint – see @ip33 review. It strongly sounds to me like the preferred listening of the early 70s urban sophisticates depicted in David Hockney’s famous ‘Mr & Mrs Clark and Percy’ painting.
Any other suggestions of paintings prompted by albums?

The Hollywood Vampires
Sounding & looking like something from an LA Sunset Strip version of Stella Street we have the car crash that is Alice Cooper’s Hollywood Vampires.
Jam-packed with aging rock stars but with added Perry Farell but also Johnny Depp it presents stodgy noisy bar-band covers. Looks like it would have been fun live though….

You Can’t Beat A Good Bad Film
A bad film – with the right company – can be almost as entertaining as a good one? Well, almost anyway…
Case in point – The Swarm
Not sure if this has been covered recently but any other recommendations. They can’t just be bad – but good bad…
The Genius Of Jimmy Webb
I’ve seen a good few Webb tunes on here lately and also the comment that it was time for (I’m sure another) appreciation thread – so I thought I’d kick it off.
I Keep It Hid has one of those classic transcendent Webb soaring choruses – this is a live version by Linda Ronstadt, a bit shakey but those vocals…that chorus….
“End Of Over”
The protocol at cricket is that you do not move until the end of the over. The stewards at test matches try to stop you – and if someone tries to move in the middle the cry ‘end of over!!!’ can be heard.
At the theatre – no chance, if you are late you can often wait until the interval.
So why at seated gigs is it OK to wander around at anytime without any consideration?
Last night, I saw David Gilmour at the RAH. The start time was clearly communicated (I’m beginning to sound a bit middle england but stick with me) – so why as the first number finally kicks off does someone saunter in with beer and snacks – scuse me, scuse me, scuse me etc. Just wait until the end of the song – you have ruined the moment for a good 20 people.
At a recent O2 concert some entourage arrived as the first number started with full burger platters, fries, beers etc. – grease, smells etc to go along with the scuse me half-laugh.
So, ‘End Of Over’ should be instituted at giogs too.
Bah!
David Gilmour Live Review (abridged)
Bloody Awesome
1. Not low-key – proper lights, videos etc and the that circular light thing 2. How many classics do you want? They’re there. They sound good. 3. New stuff? Yes, but it’s not bad 4. Tons of guitar 5. Good sound 6. And if that’s not enough – Phil Manzenera on back-up and bloody Crosby & Nash as occasional backing vocals
My 14yo self whose first album was DSOTM (white vinyl) would have been proud
The dead horse has not been flogged enough apparently
New super-duper version of The Beatles 1 complilation is on its way to Christmas stockings
The Isley Brothers Brick
I achieved something this weekend I can be proud of – I ripped the entire Isley Brothers box-set, all 400 discs.
Neilfest
Sounds cool (assuming no Storytone Tribute)

Thanks to Eleventh Dream Day noisy guitar rock lives in 2015
I have been catching up on Eleventh Dream Day – their 2015 album is such a refreshing mix of Television, Dinosaur Jr., Neil Young delivered up with twin wailing guitars – it just makes me grin…
I just love this – best guitaring since two tracks of last years Strand of Oaks – go buy! Sounds awesome on vinyl too – lots of bottom…
Nashville Watchers
Is it just me or does Frank Turner (as on the top left of the Home Page of this site) look like Nashville superstar Luke Wheeler?

The ‘Honest Trailer’
Todd vs. Tame Impala
Lying in the sun in Jersey
Perfect chance for some sunny head music
First up the new Tame Impala- suits the mood, sounds great but fades into sameyness
Then the Todd Rundgren/lindstrom collaboration – now thats how to do psychedelic spacey electronic stuff. Crazy but still melodic.
Todds the winner – hands down 1
Public Service: the new iPlayer Radio App
You can now download radio programmes in full – so not reliant on having an internet connection to stream it, some dodgy software or hoping there is a podcast
Yesterday I downloaded Ana Matronic’s disco show from Radio 2 – nice tunes (such as this EWF/Ramsey Lewis one). Easy.
