Vincent’s invitation to broad-minded men to complete a survey on sex workers and KFD’s thread about songs from a character viewpoint, resulting with a number of responses about rent boys, got me thinking.
There are a lot of songs about sex workers, mostly sung by men and mostly released in the 1970s. At least, the ones I can think of are. It’s almost as though rock stars of a certain age enjoyed a formative experience in the hands of a professional lady. Obviously, the touring encouraged the formation of short-term relationships. What went on tour stayed on tour. Perhaps, these days they are considered non-PC. Nevertheless, many of them are first rate songs and performances. Let’s see how many we can dredge up from our less than salubrious memories.
I’ll start with a track by Steely Dan that is so gentle and touching it’s practically a love song, Pearl Of The Quarter.
