Future Sound of London’s Opus is 21 years old. A continuous piece of music over 2 cds, incorporating ambient, trance, dub, organic elements and intriguing samples. I wonder if it would get a release today, let alone reach number 6 in the UK charts.
Are you an Empathiser or a Systemiser?
Researchers from the University of Cambridge have established that your preference for particular music can provide an insight into how you think. (Get outta town!)
We are told Systemizers who favour rules and patterns in the world and who are highly organised prefer high energy stuff like punk and heavy metal whilst Empathisers like mellow reflective stuff such as folk and electronica.
It all seems a bit obvious tbh and I would be more impressed if some of the acts mentioned were not so, well, passé. As for me, I’m just gonna chill to some JJ Cale. Noggin, Dude.

It’s the end of the world as we know it
BBC2 WTF? A programme about arch ponce Lawrence Llewelyn Bowhead flogging his tacky wares. A reality series about hairdressing and Family guy on a loop. Never have I felt so much like Disgusted from Tunbridge Wells.
‘ain’t nothing you can do
… is the answer to the question – What do you do if you want to buy a Van Morrison CD at a reasonable price?
Luckily I have most of what I need but Veedon Fleece is sorely missing from my collection. It would seem that Van’s back catalogue remains elusive except at eye watering prices.

Patrick Macnee RIP
Genuinely saddened by this news. The Avengers was a touchstone of my childhood and I still love it. John Steed was the epitome of a certain Britishness not seen anymore – unflappable, impeccably dressed, self deprecating and eccentric. Patrick Macnee seemed to embody those qualities in real life.

You guys know who I mean, don’t you?
Maury Muehleisen
Killed in the same plane crash as that which took Jim Croce. By all accounts a great guitarist, he originally hired Croce as a backup guitarist to tour his debut album. Something of a career beckoned before being cut brutally short in September 1973.

Pierre Bensusan
For lovers of acoustic guitar (and from the appreciation of Ryley Walker lately on here, there must be quite a few), DADGAD expert Pierre Bensusan kicks off a UK tour next month. Here’s his tribute to friend Michael Hedges
The National – England
Just gonna throw this one out there to see who salutes. One of my more memorable gigs of recent years was seeing The National. They started slow and ramped it up gradually and inexorably. I was with one of my daughters who said that Matt Berninger reminded her of a dishevelled librarian
Does Streaming Work For Artists?
Just wondering. Ron Sexsmith popped up on my Facebook today – his new album is now streaming on The Guardian. Now Ron is one artist whose every new album I would once have bought unheard. For me record buying always had a big element of instant gratification about it – pop into a record shop and for not too much money walk away with something which gave great pleasure. The streaming thing kinda takes that element away and I find I don’t buy new stuff nearly so much. Once you’ve handled the goods they don’t seem worth so much somehow.

Mrs Peel
I have been watching the old episodes of The Avengers showing on TV and very sadly Emma Peel’s missing husband has unexpectedly returned. So she says a poignant goodbye to John Steed and goes off into the sunset.
Diana Rigg was superb in The Avengers – the very best sexy posh there ever was. And a special mention for Patrick Macnee – how cool did he look in those velvet collars and chelsea boots. In one episode the other day, said Chelsea boots had green elastic sides. Those were the days.

Ryley Walker
Only just come across this guy. He seems to be channeling Bert Jansch, Van Morrison and Tim Buckley all at once. I’m expecting great things from his new album of which this song is a part.
Wanna’ see something impressive?
Amazing, no?
