PRINCE ON VINYL with Lippy Kid Thursday 9th June from 8pm Glossop Labour Club, Chapel Street, Glossop, SK13 8AT FREE ADMISSION

This Thursday, Derbyshire’s very electronica artiste Lippy Kid will be playing host to help us celebrate, and pay our respects to, the music career of the icon Prince Rogers Nelson.

From those who influenced him, to those who he influenced and collaborated with, we’ll be exploring the indelible thumbprint he’s left on the word of music.

And we’ll be playing the music Prince recorded and performed himself – those classic albums from the time it felt he ruled the world including the whole of the Purple Rain album from vinyl and in full.

So please come along and join us. Bring any Prince related music you have as we’ll try to create time for you to play it, plus share any Prince related stories you have.

Glossop Record Club CREATION RECORDS NIGHT Thursday 14th April from 8pm Glossop Labour Club, Chapel Street, Glossop, SK13 8AT FREE ADMISSION

The night will feature a tasty selection of tracks from a variety of bands who featured on the label, as well as Teenage Fanclub‘s classic Bandwagonesque played in full. There’ll be plenty of indiepop gems, a few shoegaze faves and a number of rather noisy tracks to enjoy.

The session is being put together by Creation aficionado Darren Butler, who writes: “there are so many amazing bands that have been signed to Creation but only a limited amount of time available on the night, so choosing what to play is a difficult task. We’ll hear tracks by The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, The House of Love plus many more. I’ll be mainly focusing on the early days of Creation so I’m sure I’ll be omitting some favourites. ‘Some Might Say’ that’s a good thing, but hopefully people will bring along their own vinyl to fill in the gaps.”

On Thursday 10th December, it’s the first ever Glossop Record Club CHRISTMAS SOCIAL.

Kicking off at 8pm at Glossop Labour Club, it’s our end-of-year blow out – a chance to get together, have a chat over a pint about music and put the world to rights (naturally). The team from ALL FM’s Charity Shop Classics on hand to spin some of their favourite charity shop finds throughout the evening. Feel free to bring down any records you want to get onto the turntable too.

And as it’s Christmas, we’ll also have a bit of fun with a music quiz and Secret Santa (see below for details)

Glossop Record Club returns on Thursday 8th October for SOUNDS FROM BEYOND, an excursion into the experimental, exotic and esoteric. A joint effort between Afterworder and record club regular @wholehogg, Hi-Fi Choice writer Simon Berkovitch and yours truly (Simon G), we’ll take you on a journey through the outer reaches of music, encompassing film and TV soundtracks, early electronic and tape music, Tropicalia and Hauntology.

Expect to hear John Barry, Bernard Herrmann, Goblin, Basil Kirchin, Delia Derbyshire, John Cage, Luciano Berio, White Noise, Os Mutantes, Mordant Music, Pye Corner Audio and more.

Our featured album will be Broadcast‘s debut ‘The Noise Made By People‘, a perfect synthesis of all those things mentioned above. We’ll also include a few releases from the brilliant Ghost Box record label, a selection of Joe Meek sci-fi and death discs and a recording of garden gate that will blow your mind. Really.

We’ll also be playing a recording made especially for the session by microlabel Stars, Dots And The New Junk, which has been lathe-cut to an 8 inch disc. Special stuff indeed.

So where do you start with Tony Wilson? TV newsreader, legendary record label founder, iconic nightclub owner, music conference organiser, gig promoter, writer, bar owner, professional promoter of Manchester and entrepreneur are just a few of the different hats that he wore.

Although he might never have played on a note on a record, it’s hard to think of anyone who had a greater influence on the music scene of the North West from the days of punk through to the 90s. Factory Records, The Hacienda, his ‘So It Goes’ TV show, gigs at The Factory Club – Wilson’s fingerprints are everywhere. Maybe he is best described on his gravestone – as a cultural catalyst.

We’re going to start the night with the album that paved the way for the future success of Factory Records – Unknown Pleasures, the iconic debut album by Joy Division.

Do you remember what music were you listening to in 1985? The records you bought? And where were you when it was Live Aid?

On the eve of the legendary concert’s 30th anniversary, Glossop Record Club celebrates 1985 with an evening of music on vinyl from that year, including records by the acts who played at Live Aid that summer.

Alongside listening to one of that year’s biggest-selling albums on vinyl and in full, we’ll also be compiling a ‘mixtape’ on the night using a genuine 1985 ‘music center’, so get digging through your records and bring your ’85 faves to share, or choose one from the box of records that’ll be on hand. There’s a blank C90 just waiting to be filled!

Bring your records, bring mementos and memorabillia and share your stories and music of 1985. And if you’re feeling really brave, bring along a photo of yourself from 1985 to complete the picture!
