Sorry everyone for the extended outage on the site last night and this morning.
Some site upgrades that were applied last night barfed badly and broke everything and it took a while to find out what the actual f— had happened and then fix it.
Hope you weren’t inconvenienced too much!

I have now upgraded the site to support (and enforce) https (TLS/SSL) access. This means that all activity on and within the site is being done using https:// prefixed urls/links. This is better for performance, security and SEO as Google will downgrade non https based web sites.
You may notice some display issues because of style sheets not being loaded via old cached insecure links so if you get problems try the following steps to resolve the issue:-
1) Refresh the page in your web browser
2) Clear your browser cache
3) Close and re-open your web browser
Please comment under this post if none of the above works for you specifying what device you are using (phone/tablet/desktop etc) and what web browser and operating system you are using and I’ll look into the problem.

Some may not have noticed but earlier this evening due to a software problem all comments got unlinked and effectively disappeared … this was a .. er.. sub-optimal situation. After much swearing and gnashing of teeth we’ve managed to restore nearly all the comments to their rightful place except for a few strays… linked to this post are all these wayward comments that could not be linked back to their original posts.
Please can the comment owners PM me to let me know which post their comment belongs to and I will re-link it to its rightful place…

You may have noticed a new change to the blog list page
i.e. this one.. https://theafterword.co.uk/blog/
When you load this page now the system will now check each post listed and if it finds any unread comments (based on when you last took a look at the post) then the post intro is highlighted in a pale blue colour and you’ll also see a link top left that will take you straight to the first new comment in the thread…

We’re looking at enhancing the Afterword site in various ways and so we need to gather ideas and comments from the massive for changes that, in your opinion, would be ‘good to have’.. once we can get a list of changes together it will get prioritised by the level of support … so as your starter for ten here’s some ideas we have come up with all by ourselves like..:-
1) Buying AW T-Shirts and other ‘merch’ on the site
2) Share posts/comments on Facebook/Twitter etc
3) New section ‘Afterword Guide To…’ you pick a band/artist/author/director etc and write a quick guide with links/clips/whatever
4) Up/Like/Down/Dislike buttons on comments/posts (latter 2 options may not be implemented)
5) User name type ahead look up when sending a PM
6) Enhanced messaging – WYSIWYG editor and support sending attachments (images/mp3s)
7) When you are logged in then blog comments will be » Continue Reading.

Due to popular request we’ve built a comment edit function which will soon get added to the blog. As it is brand new stuff we’d like some beta test volunteers to kick the tyres and take it for a spin into the nearest ditch etc…
The basics of the new function are this:-
– If you post a comment you will get 10 minutes to edit or delete it
– A separate timer is maintained for each of your comments
-You will see a countdown displayed during the 10 minutes for each editable comment
– NB: If someone replies to your comment within 10 minutes then you can no longer delete it but you can still edit it
– After the 10 mins has expired you’ve had it and your comment is set in stone unless you can persuade an mod/admin to change it
– That’s it..
The 10 minute time period is an arbitrary limit and can be changed by consensus
So if you can help by volunteering then just add a comment here .. er.. it is not active yet so no editing on here is possible yet 🙂
