New season of The Trip (very minor spoiler alert)
Currently laid up with a virus – so have spent the last few days watching the new season of The Trip. It’s on Sky Atlantic this time, meaning you can watch them all when you want, as they’ve added them to anytime. I believe it may also be available on Now TV, for those who refuse Murdoch’s offer of entertainment. It is good, but not as good as the previous two seasons. Seemed to be missing something this time around. The ending is, frankly, bizarre. Anybody else watched?

Anybody had experience of paying a debt back to the UK tax office?
Not a huge amount, but large enough, it seems I’m due to pay the tax office some money due to a genuine oversight on my part in tax year 2015 and 16. Waiting for the final bill before I discuss ‘a payment plan’, but was just wondering if anyone had any experience/dealings of such a situation, and if so, how they found it?
Red Cross steeping to in to help NHS hospitals
Not normally overly political, but is anybody else completely shocked at the news the Red Cross volunteers are having to step in to help the NHS? When you think of the Red Cross, you think of war-torn regions, refugees, humanitarian crisis etc. To think, in the day and age, this government is not intervening with additional funding, and instead allowing this to happen. The mind boggles…. What a disgrace Jeremy Hunt really is.
What does it mean if a vinyl is warped?!
I keep reading about warped, and just this week I sold some vinyls on eBay and somebody has informed me the record they bought from me is warped. The record in question had never been played or left the sleeve in 20 years, so I don’t know if that is what caused it. What does warped mean and how can you tell when your record is indeed, warped?!
The vinyl quality – rip off?
Just taken delivery of the latest Peter Gabriel vinyl reissues of his albums ‘So’, ‘Us’ and ‘Up’. They are genuine things of beauty; I don’t pretend to know what a half-speed remaster on 180gram vinyl can truly offer. However it did get me thinking, if this level of sound quality can be achieved on vinyl, then is a great deal of the stuff we are spending our hard-earned on sub-standard? The albums were about the same price as any new vinyl release, but are very clearly superior in sound quality (at least on my system). Surely every record we buy now should be at this level?

So Pet Shop Boys new single is a nostalgic look at the 1990s. In my mind, the 1990s doesn’t feel like a particularly long time ago – in fact it feels like yesterday.
Poker
One of my new year resolutions was to learn how to play poker. Not a big card player by any stretch of the imagination but was always slightly fascinated on the odd time I visited a casino or friends had a poker night in the local pub. I also recently read Victoria Coren’s book, ‘For Richer For Poorer. Confessions of a Player’ and that only intensified my curiosity. I then recently realised it was November, so over the last week or so I’ve viewed various videos, read a few articles etc. It really does appear my fascination was warranted. – I’m spellbound with the stories, tactics, rules. Any players on here?
Your inconspicuous footballing hero?
I’ve just been reading a book by former Leeds Utd striker Ian Baird, who in the mid to late 80s was my footballing hero – along with his teammate, John Sheridan. He didn’t hit the heights of the top league for any great length of time, and never with Leeds, so he isn’t exactly a household name. The book is called ‘Bairdy’s Gonna Get You’, which I remember was the title of a chant the Leeds fans used to sing in his honour. He was a no nonsense kind of player, but scored loads, and I mean loads, of goals. I liked him as you always got the sense that he was playing the game like it was his last – he’d literally run himself in to the ground every match. His energy levels, particularly for that era of the game when it was still a few pints, fish ‘n chips after the match (and I’m talking the players, not fans), was fairly remarkable. Aside from the obvious, George Best, Kenny Dalglish etc, who was your inconspicuous footballing hero?
Ever felt ripped off?
You know the feeling – taken for a ride by some God-awful large corporate company…
I’ll start – 18 months ago I left a job. My former colleagues were kind enough to do a collection, and knowing I like to attend gigs they bought me a Ticketmaster gift card. Very nice of them too. They must have been feeling flush, as I had the tidy sum of £280 on the card. Today I attempted to use the card to book some Strictly Come Dancing tickets as a Xmas present, only to find the gift card had expired. On closer inspection, in tiny words, it says that you have to use the card within a year. Yes, I feel ripped off and I didn’t even pay for the damn thing!!
