I’m sure this has been done before, but to celebrate the new album what’s your favourite HMHB lyric? So many to choose from, from laugh-out-loud to ‘oh so cutting’. Mine is probably “There’s a man with a mullet going mad with a mallet in Millets” (link to song in comments)
Captain Beefheart fans take note
Why this lot has emerged in little old Bury St Edmunds I’ve no idea, but it’s up for auction this Friday. Some interesting vinyls (sorry) also in the auction I might have to pop up and take a look!

New Stones song
Like the video, great riff…..…but……
Jimi in the desert
After a glowing review in this months Mojo about how this Touareg bands guitarist ‘unknowingly’ was channelling the sprit of Hendrix in his desert blues performances thought I’d check it out. The album itself isn’t yet on Tidal, my choice for streaming, but earlier ones are well worth a listen, and this live performance in a yard(?) shows what the reviewer is talking about. Loving the kids reactions when the beat drops (I believe that’s what the yoof call it). Will be playing more for the rest of the day, bringing some sunshine to a dismal Suffolk day!
ENO sings! ……..LIVE!!!
It’s taken a long while but his voice still sounds good to me! Looking forward to whole album in September
Scritti Politti in Norwich
Have 2 tickets for first gig of Scritti Politti tour at Norwich 21/9 but can’t now go ☹️. Anyone interested in them?
Eat to the beat!
From today’s Times. Listen to Miles helps you to eat healthily, listen to HM and it’s burgers all day. Mind you, they suggest ‘cool, melodic’ Miles, I wonder what the extended version of Bitches Brew makes you peckish for?
Like a drop of wine Manga style?
If you never thought the world of wine and Japanese Manga comics ever had anything to do with one another then you’ve never encountered ‘Drops of God’ by Tadashi Agi. Described by Wine Spectator as ‘Shizuku Kanzaki is summoned home one day to discover that his estranged father, a famous wine critic with a cellar that’s the stuff of legend, has died. But he soon finds that claiming his inheritance will not be so simple as signing on a line: His father has devised an elaborate game in which he must identify and describe 13 top wines around the world—against a competitor, a brash young wine virtuoso the elder Kanzaki adopted. Shizuku works at a beer company.’ Just seen that all volumes are now priced at £0.00 (that’s free) if you have a Kindle from the tax dodgers (by that I mean Amazon). Ideal for lockdown wine study!
Who were the big winners in the streaming wars?
Interesting article from The Quietus from ex-Word scribe about who were the biggest winners in the download & streaming wars

From Richard Williams’ always excellent ‘The Blue Moment’ blog

Joseph Jarman RIP
Sad to hear of the death of Joseph Jarman from Art Ensemble of Chicago last week. This great obituary comes from Richard Williams of thebluemoment.com, a great AW friendly blog. I saw AEoC at Fairfield Halls in Croydon some time in the late 80s? with the great Lester Bowie but Joseph was the performer of the night. Sometimes he was too pharping for me but at other times he produced beautiful soulful sounds. Time for an AEoC playlist I think!
Perfect Sunday listening

Music in TV ads
I’m sure this has been done lots of times before but was surprised to say the least to hear Devo’s ‘Whip it!’ Used in the latest Premier Inns ad. What are they trying to say?

Norway first to switch off FM for DAB only radio
the Scandies do seem to be moving ahead with all kind of things – can’t find it now but there was a FB post a short while ago saying why Finland was the best place in the world to live. Time to buy a bigger coat?
Brian ENO Reflection App
I know it’s only just appeared in the iTunes App Store but has anyone tried the ‘generative music’ app yet? It’s £30 so would like an opinion on it before I shell out. It sounds like something interesting but discrete (sorry) to play when doing some thinking work. Listened to album on Spotify and it sounds good, needs a bedtime listen before I make my mind up though!
There, I’ve said it….
So a glass or two may have been drunk, but I’ve been listening and thinking about some of these albums (I still call them that) of 2016 and……well no, sorry……but… I bought Blackstar on Amazon preorder and when it arrived was pleasantly surprised but how many times have I listened to it since? Definitely under the required 6 so listened again today and…it really isn’t that good is it? Always like Laughing Len but while this is definitely a good album, would it be in the top 10 if he hadn’t……well you know Radiohead – again nothing new here and they’ve done it better before….same can be said for Mr Cave I’m afraid (and I’m definitely a fan here) Michael Kiwanadu….ok like this one (except for the annoying single) Paul Simon will be seen as the genius he is once he dies I suppose Oops, missed out Teengae Fanclub but please…come on…best of the year???? Wilco…never really seen the point, Case, Laing etc can see this one growing on me, and Avalanches?? Why is it good that this one sounds exactly the same as the last one which was years ago? Now going down the list and was looking forward » Continue Reading.
Pollsters……..WTF???
If you ran a poll asking if people thought Pollsters were a bunch of ****wits, what do we think the result would be? GET A REAL JOB!!!
Unbelievable Jeff!
Sly little Afterword-friendly pun by Jeff Stirling on Gillette Soccer Saturday today. “The scorer was Niall Southerland, that’ll be appreciated by his brothers and Quiver” Mrs H despairs about this programme – according to her it’s watching blokes watching football on the TV – and what’s wrong with that?
Rich Hall on Dylan
Went to see Rich Hall in Bury St Edmunds last night. Thought this song about His Bobness would be appreciated here Sorry if it’s a repost

Das Blaue Palais ‘Welt Am Draht’
What does it sound like?:
From Dusseldorf (naturally) and channelling the usual Neu!, Harmonia, Kraftwerk (of course) and basically side 1 of ‘Low’ and ‘Heroes’, if you like your beats Motorik and your synths bleeping you’ll like this. Found from the review section of the excellent ‘Electronic Sound’ magazine – I get mine from the amazing Readly site that has been spoken about many times before on AW (it’s like Spotify for magazines – have no idea how it makes any money, if you don’t know it check it out).
What does it all *mean*?
’70s were funky in Germany – who’d have guessed?
Goes well with…
Rain……well that’s what it’s going well with in Suffolk

History of Rock 1976
OK so I’m more often a lurker to this site, and I’m sure that there has been numerous links to the History of Rock magazine before, and I’ve only read a few of them (almost 10 quid for a magazine!!!! – I may be 57 but I tend to read most of my stuff on my lovely IPad and magazines, although I used to live for them, now are something that tend to only be bought for holidays) but when I saw the most recent issue was 1976, what I consider to be one of the most influential years of my life (I was 17, at VIth form, what did I know?) it had to be purchased (unlike the infrequent Mojo purchases at the local (Bury St Edmunds) market for £1 a copy (and only one month out of date!). So what have I learned? – that I now realise why I brought the NME every week and not the Melody Maker – for those not in the know about this magazine it tends to spread between NME & MM articles/reviews. God the MM was so pompous and self-important (the 1976 HOR includes an album review of Slik for Christs » Continue Reading.
Looking for a concept
Decorating day, looking for something different to listen to, so fancied some good concept album, preferably with a story that you can follow (any narration welcome). Enjoyed Rick Wakeman’s Journey to Centre of Earth so now onto Myths & Legends of King Arthur (not so great…) But what should I try next?
Steve Earle ‘Terraplane’
What does it sound like?:
A traditional blues title for a traditional dirty blues stomping set of songs highlighting the usual underworld characters of Steve Earle, whose lived a hard- nosed blues life himself. Less of the country-tinged themes of the last few albums, the Dukes rock out – would sound great live!
What does it all *mean*?
White men can sing the blues afterall!
Goes well with…
Drink, Drink, a Drink….with a bourbon chaser
