Brand New Squeeze(er)

I’m absolutely delighted to be able to share with you the newest addition to our household. No, not another cat, but this utterly beautiful work of art created by the Afterword’s own Pencilsqueezer, called “Out of the blue, and into the hot”. It was commissioned in memory of Mr Breakfast’s late mum, who among other things was a big fan of jazz and swing music. Her name was Iris, and as you can see, the colours of this flower have been incorporated. Of all the instruments Peter could have chosen, it gladdens my heart that he went for the trumpet, reflecting my fondness for the twin trumpets of Tijuana. I dare say this was no coincidence 🙂

My photo of course doesn’t do it justice, so I’ll post P’s own image in the comments so that you can get a closer look. Of course in real life it’s even more amazing. BS LP ATM

Hi chums, I wonder if you can help (course you can!). I bought a very nice copy of Carry On Up The Charts today – the single LP version as opposed to the 2LP. I looked it up on Discogs, and to my surprise there are absolutely none for sale, and none listed as having previously been sold. Further searching revealed zero copies elsewhere online. I know that this gazillion-selling comp probably sold most copies on CD, but the LP can’t be that rare, can it? And if it is rare, is it actually sought-after?

I didn’t have much to contribute to the Best Album Poll 2015 thread, since the vast majority of my purchases last year weren’t new releases. I get the feeling this was also the case for several Afternerds and Afterbirds, so let’s have another listy thread of your fave new-to-you records of 2015; those back catalogue, second hand and re-issued albums that you discovered through the year. Do an ordered top ten if you like, or list as many or few as you want.

My faves follow in the comments, in no particular order after no.1. Most were boot sale LPs costing a quid.

A quick burst* of something uplifting

A few days ago I re-watched the first Pitch Perfect movie in the company of my teenage niece, and was reminded just how great the audition montage scene is. A celebration of pure pop, this cover of Kelly Clarkson’s Since You Been Gone is skillfull, funny, cheesy of course, but mainly uplifting – just the thing for a drizzly Wednesday.

Silly things you’ve done in the name of music

The lure of sex can make us do irrational things, drugs can certainly cause silly behaviour – but what about rock ‘n’ roll? A couple of days ago I went to the trouble of finding the AARP (American Association of Retired People) CD version of Bob Dylan’s most recent album Shadows In The Night – the one given away on the front of a magazine – from a seller in the US, purely because it would fit nice and neatly inside the BobBox, alongside the rest of the catalogue. With shipping I paid around twice as much as the jewel case version would have cost on amazon (about ten quid instead of five).

Please make me feel better/help to normalise my behaviour by telling us: what silly, irrational or downright nerdy things have you done in the name of music?

Adele at the BBC

Did anyone watch this last night? As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, her music, although admirable, isn’t my cup of tea, but this mixture of live performances, an interview with Graham Norton, plus a couple of pre-recorded skits made for great Friday night telly. She came across as warm, down to earth, modest and very funny, which I suppose we already knew, but it was nice to see it confirmed. Best of all was this sketch, where with the help of makeup and latex she posed as Adele-wannabe ‘Jenny’ and joined half a dozen others to audition as a tribute act.

Vinyl room service

Staying overnight in That London? Don’t feel like going out or watching porn? One hotel is now offering a vinyl room service menu, ‘handpicked’ by Annie Mac and Lauren Laverne. Annie’s list of “vinyls” (yuk) is pretty good actually, although sadly you’ll be brought a Crosley carver to play them on.

I wonder how much they charge for this?
