Last Friday, on Midsummer Eve, I had the strangest, very intergalactic, space-age dream. I was hurtling towards Mars in a spaceship full of Swedish families heading for the Red Planet to set up a colony and then celebrate Midsummer. As all the druids among you will know, Thursday 20th June was the Summer Solstice: the longest day of the year. And as all the Scandinavians and Scandophiles will know, Friday 21st June was the official date for the celebration of Midsummer Eve. A very enjoyable day of the year that rivals Xmas in popularity. No question about it: it’s far more fun. Far more sun. Sweden is in full bloom and at its most beautiful.
Also, unlike Santa Lucia and Xmas, there are no big concerts or commercial events in enormous sports arenas. There are a few concerts and events but it’s all very local and small-scale.
