My car is fast approaching deaths door & will probably be changing it in a month or two (due to come into a LITTLE bit of money.

With a combination of a (hopefully) a reasonable amount for mine on trade in, a little bit of cash from me & a loan I am hoping to be driving a different car by the end of march or so.

I am considering getting a hybrid car (low emissions & road tax) & am wondering if any members of our parish have any knowledge/ experience of hybrids.

All views (good/bad/indifferent) are wanted to help me in my search.

s a rule, I try to form my own opinion about the million & one things going on in the outside world, & to help me do this, I try to read up on whatever the subject in hand is, & I am happy to say that I will pick the brains of anyone who I think may know more than me about a subject (Which would be most subjects barring 1970s number 1 singles (UK) & the principles of electrical generation & distribution on The Invincible class Aircraft carrier). More often than not, I find that invariably I tend to use this site as my first go to place when I am trying to mug up on something, as I believe that in this small parish of ours a lot of people know a lot of things about a lot of things (If anyone doesnt understand the diode failure inicator on a brushless generator – I am your man).

So, climate change, global warming, the increasing size of the hole in the ozone layer blah blah.

There was a post on my facebook timeline this morning, but I cant find it now. In it, the fragrant Katie Hopkins came out as being supportive of Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting he would ban all Muslims from entering the USA. Katie Hopkins is a professional controversialist, without the brains or wit to do it properly.

To me she is nothing more than a poundland version of Anne Coulter, & she is just jumping on the nearest, newest bandwagon.

The woman (Hopkins) is always quick enough to be critical of others, but I have no idea what she is for. What does she actually contribute to the nation?

As far as I know, she is famous for being famous & nothing else.

Vile woman IMHO.

I have a couple of word podcasts that I enjoy listening to again & again, & I would really like to get my mitts on all of the others (The full length subscribers only ones natch). I seem to remember that there has been a post here or the previous site that these were all available to all comers.

All good so far, but for the life of me, I cannot remember where they are. Am I imagining it?

Can someone here please point me to where I can find them?

Just read on the BBC website that Jim Diamond has just passed away at the age of 64.

I dont know about anyone else, but I find it really sad.

I have mentioned here before that I am a computer numpty, so I am expecting to receive hoots of derision &/or contempt.

My problem is I am getting ads coming up constantly. I have done a little bit of mooching on my laptop & am getting instructions to access my contol panel & then uninstall royalads from my installed programmes.

This is where I am getting bogged down, for I do not appear to have the royalads programmes installed.

So, is this old sailor missing something really obvious?

Just been reading through the comments on the Scottish politics thread & it got me thinking.

Before I go any further, can I apologise in advance if what I say comes over as naive/idealistic.

So, simply put, why cant councils build more houses? And as a slight aside, part of the recent Conservative manifesto was giving people living in housing association property the right to buy. I thought the property belonged to the housing association & was not the states to sell off.

As part of my Sky package I have various TV complete series/seasons available to download & watch at my own pace.

About 5 weeks ago, I downloaded all 5 series of The Wire, & finished it last weekend. Now I realise that it is an old series (I think it finished 2008 ish), but I honestly think it is one of the best TV series I have ever seen, right up there with The Sopranos.

The stories covered a different aspect of Baltimore life & how it affected different people & how they lived. The cast are almost all unknown to me, although I have seen Dominic West in other things since.

Everything about it felt real to me, (although what does a 59 year old white English man know about Baltimore urban life? – in other words – WTF do i know? )

Anyone who has not seen this & has access to it should give it a try – wonderful stuff.

I have just been reading the Live aid thread & Mooseys comment about it should have been 5 years earlier & in particular the reunited Beatles.

The Beatles are my favourite band & I love listening to them/ reading & writing about them.

So, the Fabs, headlining Live aid at Wembley stadium, Sir Bob has allocated them 30 minutes – what would the set list be?

If you prefer, a reunited Fabs headlining Glastonbury, obviously they could play for a lot longer – again, what would a 2 hour set list be?

Perhaps not as easy as it may first seem.

I think I may well need to take my tin hat out of mothballs with this post.

A couple of hours ago I went & did a bit of shopping. When I got to Morrisons, a member of staff was at the door, with her finger to her lips mouthing “Please stand still, its a minutes silence for those killed in Tunisia”

I have nothing but sympathy for those who died & their families, a terrible thing to happen, going away on holiday, to never come home.

But, (& This is where my tin hat gets put on). Why did we have the minutes silence ?

When did sort of thing start? Its almost like competitive grieving to me.

Some of the coffins were carried off of the aircraft by members of the RAF – Why ?

I am genuinely not trolling/ unsympathetic/unfeeling, but when/how does this end ?

Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am a callous heartless bastard, but I would genuinely like to know if I am the only person here who feels this way.

I think there a lots of examples of this, so I will just list a few to kick things off.

I have not long got in from picking my wife up from work.

Made a brew for us both & flashed up my laptop, & as usual, went to the BBC site to see whats going on in the world. The first 2 stories I saw were horrifying.

A trainee dentist of “Asian appearance” was attacked while shopping in Tesco, & according to the report, his hand was almost severed from his arm. By all accounts the alleged assailant was “avenging Lee Rigby”.

In the second report, a woman “of Asian appearance” was attacked in her own home, suffered multiple stab wounds & was beheaded.

I realise that both of the alleged assailants may well be suffering mental health problems (I would be surprised if they are not), but I genuinely despair that these things have happened.

What does it mean & what can we do? – I havent got a clue, but feel that little bit less optimistic about the future.

I have mentioned this site before, but it was a long time ago & I feel it is worth another mention.

Now, I could easily be described as a wet, namby pamby, lefty, do gooder atheist, &, TBPH, you wouldnt be far off of the mark if indeed you did think that of me. However, over the years I have had friends who are on a different page from me on many things (& I include the good folk who are members of the here parish of ours).

Layjennelmen, could I pease bring to your attention the conservapedia site. It is essentially an online encyclopedia, similar to wikipedia, but written from an American, right wing, Ultra Conservative/Republican, Christian fundamentalist perspective.

I like to think there is a broad range of opinions on this site, but I think there is a large measure of tolerance towards other views. That being the case, I could be wrong in thinking that the majority (if not all) of us will find this site is unnerving to say the least.

I happen upon it now & then out of a masochistic curiosity, but I actually find it scary.

I went to the Doctors recently, & as I am hard of hearing, my wife came with me to make sure I understood everything the Doctor said to me.

After some coughing, poking, prodding & listening, he said, well, I am a bit puzzled, I am going to do further tests, & I will need a sample of your Poo, urine, Sweat, Blood, Semen & Saliva.

I turned to my wife & said “What did he say”?

She said “He wants your pants”

I am watching a programme called Impossible engineering on the Yesterday channel.
