I didn’t realise Whigfield had done more than two songs, and I couldn’t name the one which wasn’t Saturday Night. Luckily, she’s just released a 4CD + DVD best of, so we can all catch up.
ATM: the popular trombone
Daughter’s friend is learning grade 2 trombone and is a bit bored with playing along with classical & big-band stuff. I can think of Dexys and Specials (or anything else with Rico on). Can you suggest any more? I know you can…
Oh, Mother*
How’s this for niche? Cactus World News are releasing an album of rarities and out-takes. I doubt HMV will be opening at midnight for that.
* See what I did there?
Music on the idiot lantern
The Suedes are on BBC4 tonight from Glasters. All Shook Up, presented by Marc Riley, is on the iPlayer. I enjoyed the pilot episode. There are now three more. Wire rather good on ep 2.
Paging Alanis Morissette
I’m just had a very serious email from our local Neighbourhood Watch man. Is this ironic?
Crimestoppers have been hijacked by scammers.
Don’t have nightmares…
What do you buy the person who already has Joy Division Oven Gloves?
How about Frank Turner socks?

Is there a doctor in the house?
This pic is from the latest Q. I’m no expert on men’s tongues, but I reckon MES needs medical attention.

HJH GCSE
Sgt. Pepper to be in GCSE syallabus.
Attention musicians: new Cambridgeshire venue looking for acts
My local village hall used to be the cinema for the residential TB hospital next door. It’s recently had £1.25M spent on renovations and is now “proper lush”. I’ve agreed to run gigs in there every 4-6 Saturday evenings, to entertain the village residents and hospital patients next door – let’s face it, with a 3kW PA system they’re going to hear it. I’ve enlisted a group of volunteers and created a not-for-profit organisation to distribute to local community projects any profits we do somehow make.
If you fancy coming to play, drop me a line. @Twang? @DisappointmentBob?
As a booking policy we’re more interested in original material than covers, unless it’s really unusual covers. Dexys tributes might well be considered.
ATM dishwashers
In a bid to out-bore Twang’s USB drive thread, this morning the door hinges on my Indesit dishwasher snapped off. Time for a replacement. Integrated (we have a cupboard door to put on the front) and not silly money. Suggestions, please.
I’ve just read Ben Watt’s ‘Patient’
Being recently diagnosed with Crohn’s has led me to read lots but most of it has been so gloomy I decided to stop. And then I remembered Ben Watt’s intestinal illness. I’m no EBTG fan but I enjoyed ‘Romany and Tom’, his recent memoir of his parents. It might be 19 years since publication, but ‘Patient – the true story of a rare illness’ is still well worth a read. There’s always someone worse off than you, in this case that someone is Ben Watt, but he comes across as stoical, pragmatic and full of humour. At less than 180 pages, a quick read and well worth a few quid. There’s definitely light at the end of my tunnel. I might go and give his album another listen.
Digital music sales now match physical ones
This is pretty significant for those of us who enjoy a disc and a sleeve. CDs coming through the letterbox will be like buying vinyl was in the early 90’s CD age. Mind you, I did that, too.
White Water
The Slow Show’s debut album arrived on vinyl this afternoon. The kids are in bed. Cans are on. Consider me a pig in shit. I do hope it’s good, I’ve been waiting two and a half years for it…
For Hannah – nothing else to Read More of
There is no more.
What’s wrong with this picture?
If this works, here’s a screen grab of last week’s Midsomer Murders*. It’s from a folk gig in Lower Crosby village hall, a venue with an audience capacity of about 50.
Just out of shot are a pair of 18″ subs, below the stacked pair of Marshall 4×12 cabs pictured. And that’s per side, on a stage about 15 feet wide. Don’t these TV people know anything?
* My wife watches it. And I was on sedatives following a surgical procedure. Otherwise I’d have left the room, obviously.
The Slow Show
The release of White Water by The Slow Show has been put back by a week. I’m considering postponing my birthday by 7 days in response. I’ve been waiting for this album since I first did the sound for them in Sep 2012. I’m going to be disappointed, aren’t I?
