I still tune into Later but for last few series I’ve generally been fast forwarding more than watching. The latest one though is really good. Jazz themed and thankfully that doesn’t mean Gregory Porter (apologies to any fans out there). Proper young guns of the UK jazz scene doing their stuff, impressive young new artist Joy Crookes , and some dude called Kano doing interesting things with rap backed by strings and choir. Even co host Jamie Cullum was good and boy can he play the piano (the obligatory duet with Jools). Not a hoary old rocker in sight – worth tuning in.
Sans Voix – The Feedback File
I hope you will forgive a shameless bit of self publicity interrupting your Saturday morning. A new Feedback File album has emerged and available on all of the usual streaming platforms as week as my own Bandcamp site. It’s a bit of a side-step from the usual singer songwriter fare as all instrumental and features my good pal @Twang on a few tracks including this one which is a paean to my all time musical hero Nick Drake.

10 Albums That You Need To Listen To This Year
According to 6 Music.
I’ve looked at this list and thought No, Who?, No, No, Who? etc. Still what do we know.
I wouldn’t say that there is anything I’ve heard that you ‘need’ to listen to but would just plug the new Calexico/Iron & Wine collaboration ‘Years To Burn’ – I should do a review but I’m a bit tired. Its just great songs beautifully played and sung and that’s all you really ‘need’ to know.
The new king of biscuits
Nairn’s stem ginger oat biscuits. Knocks the perennial ginger nut into cocked hat. Chocolate digestives – hah – condemned to the tin of indifference. This biscuit know no bounds – it works in every situation. Tremble biscuits of the world – the new king is here.
The Time, The Place, The Song – You Tell The Story
It was 1977 and I had been living in the Big Smoke for 6 months having slowly migrated south via Rotherham and then 4 years enjoying the experience but failing the diploma at Leicester Poly. But here I was living the life – sharing a flat in Finchley Central (£4 a week rent I’ll have you know)– a first job, money in my back pocket and pretty much out on the razz most nights. It was the best of times.
We were invited to a party somewhere near Euston – in a hall of residence for the University of Iowa (yeah I was wondering where the hell that was at the time). I started going out with one of the girls there – Beth – my first proper relationship and we were in love – you know that special one, the one you will never ever forget, the one that simply cannot be repeated. Of course it was doomed – she was going back to the Midwest in a few months and we both accepted that we were just running towards the edge of a cliff. After 6 months she went back and I followed like a sick dog » Continue Reading.
The Pearlfishers – Love and Other Hopeless Things
What does it sound like?:
Do you remember when, back in the day, you used to walk around school with your favourite obscure band LP proudly tucked under your arm – just to let people know ‘Hey this is me’? Well for the last 22 years The Pearlfishers have been one of my ‘obscure bands’.
Essentially ‘they’ are David Scott – an unassuming Scottish university lecturer by day but also a wonderful songwriter who has produced 8 albums since 1997 – so maybe not the most prolific but he’s as consistent as hell. The latest release has just emerged on the brilliant Marina label and I’m awaiting my pre-ordered copy so this review is more an overview of their music.
Im not sure if I own everything of any other artist or whether I would always buy without listening but then I know I’m getting. So if you want cutting edge, left-field, innovative and constantly evolving musical styles then look elsewhere. However if you want sophisticated pop songs that hark back to the classic writers of the 60’s and early 70’s then look no further. If Jimmy Webb or Burt Bacharach had been born in Falkirk maybe » Continue Reading.
What Are Words Worth ?
Ive noticed over the last year or so certain words that have started to take on new nuances and usage in the media – often in music or film reviews but also in general journalese.
Albums, films and books now often seem to have an ‘arc’ maybe we should blame Steve Winwood ?
And have you noticed that there is often a ‘narrative’ that underpins a story. I’ve even heard it used in reference to a football match.
‘Construct’ is another often used in psychobabble eg “the concept of reality is simply a human construct”.
‘Trope’ – that one gets put about these days – cropped up in a recent political podcast .
And finally ‘the optics’ – journalists love this.
I don’t mind any of these – its just an observation. Although ‘construct’ does make me want to shout ‘bollocks’ in response.
Anyone spotted any others that seem to be in vogue ?
Khruangbin
Im probably way behind the pace on this one (as per usual) but just discovered this band. A trio of young folk who are seemingly borrowing from all manner of guitar based music incl Fleetwood Mac, The Shads and even (mellow) Frank Zappa. Its all very tasteful, highly melodic and groovy as hell. Seems to have absolutely no relevance to anything going on at the moment but they are suddenly getting a lot of attention. Thats what I love about the music scene these days – so many strands covering all kinds of everything.
Neneh Cherry ‘Broken Politics’ / David Crosby ‘Here If You Listen’
What does it sound like?:
Two artists from different generations but somehow their latest releases share a bond in the way they quietly reflect the state of the world today through the their own personal reflections. Both have grown up a bit and have seemingly eased down the sass and bravado that shone through in earlier albums. Yet Crosby cant resist dusting down the freak flag on “Other Half Rule’ with its references to ‘Rocket Man and Little Hands’ but it seems more a resigned sigh than the previous calls for action. Cherry herself says “I’m very shy about taking on big themes with the airs that I’ve got a solution — who has the fucking solutions?”
Crosby’s album is the 3rd instalment in as many years starting with Lighthouse in 2016 and Sky Trails last year. After years in the musical wilderness he returned to the simple acoustic style that made his name – elliptical chord progressions with those luminous open tunings that made songs like Guinnevere so appealing to those operating outside of the rock sphere like Miles Davis. The track ‘1974’ could happily sit on the wondrous ‘If Only I Could Remember My Name’. He has » Continue Reading.
Saint Etienne
Venue:
The London Library
Date: 14/10/2018
‘Fancy going to see Saint Etienne at the British Library ?’ Well that will be a bit different I thought and so it was. It was on one hand a very intimate gig – probably no more than 300 people. Yet it was held in the vast foyer – and I mean vast –the ceiling about 100 ft above us –great swathes of bare wall and open staircases and I’m thinking this will sound really shit! Anyway the male members of the party dutifully parked ourselves dead centre of the stage equi-distant between the speaker stacks (‘cos we know about these kind of things don’t we?) whilst the ladies went and sat on the side, behind the speaker columns and parallel with the stage – what novices, clearly no idea.
So on came the band and within 30 seconds my worst fears came true as Sarah Cracknell’s beautiful but fragile voice disappeared like smoke into the void. Three numbers in I gave up and wandered down the side to where our other halves were dancing around and seemingly having a great time. The reason being that they were right next to a smallish » Continue Reading.

Greatest album sleeve
I’ve just bought a battered old copy of this album simply because I love the sleeve so much. An iconic image of a man on the cusp off becoming the biggest thing in the music industry and much more. It’s the ordinariness of it that strikes me- it looks like what it is ie a picture of two young things caught up in each other and blissfully unaware of what is coming
Any other suggestions for great sleeves ?

The Blue Moment (Richard Williams blog)
This site is worth checking out. You may remember Richard Williams as the first face of the OGWT and also as contributor to Melody Maker back in the early 70s or maybe, in a later guise, as a sports writer for the Guardian. This blog is mainly focussed on music and within that very much jazz and left field artists oriented. But he’s a really good writer so the articles are always worth checking out and contain lots of ‘anorak’ detail. Current feature is about the keyboard player Larry Young who of course played with Johnny Mac in Lifetime (wake up @Colin H !).

Steven Wilson – Hammersmith 27th January
27/01/2016
Due to other commitments I now cannot make the Steven Wilson gig I was going to with @Twang. So a ticket going spare – £40 (ono). Been looking forward to this for last 6 months – my album of the year so I want this to go a deserving home.
This should be a pretty special gig

What a Mess
I had really no idea about the complexity of the situation within Syria until I saw this brief video. How on earth anyone can feel that more bombing is going to help bring about any improvement or stability must be a far wiser man than me. I am very conflicted about what the UK should do but have a deep unease about the likely outcome.
Happy Monday everybody !

Thomas Dybdahl
Venue:
St Giles- In-The-Fields, London
Date: 26/11/2015
I missed him when he last came round with a full band so was determined to get along to this one. Also intrigued by the venue which worked really well other than having to sit on wooden pews – not good for ageing bones so I ended up standing. For those that don’t know him – he’s Norwegian and released to date about 5 albums, all good and a few outstanding. Whilst I’m loathe to give comparisons if you can think a less intense Jeff Buckley with a smattering of John Martyn/Nick Drake in the way he uses open tunings and unusual guitar voicings. Very affable and relaxed , asked for and played requests and covered songs from most albums. I was worried that the elegiac and ambient arrangements that appear on record would lessen the songs but not at all. He’s a great singer with impeccable guitar technique and took great care with how he presented the songs even insisting on mimicking the fade in intro to ‘Grace’ by starting away from the mike and moving in. If you want to sample his stuff try his latest ‘What’s Left is Forever’ » Continue Reading.
A game for choosing cds as inspired by ‘The Diceman’
I’m finding it increasingly difficult to choose what the play and end up with stack of favourites/recent purchases next to cd player which rarely changes and just grows. Meanwhile in the living room I have a stack of cds stacked in 6 storage towers.
So the new game is throw a dice several times to pick a cd (bear with me – its sad life but someone has to live it)
1st throw is which column to choose 2nd throw is which section to pick going down the column. Now it gets tricky as there are more than 6 sections so…. 3rd throw if even is start from top or odd start from bottom then repeat 2 and 3 to count across the cds to find the actual disc
The first cd I got was Vetiver’s ‘Things of the Past’. Guess I hadn’t played it for about 4 years and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Go on give it a go you know you want to.
PS of course when it lands on Trout Mask Replica and I’m not in the house on my own problems could ensue – what would Luke Rhinehart suggest I wonder ??
The Afterword Music Quiz – The PROG Lyric Round !!
The following are first lines or part of the first line from 20 Prog acts. The only clue is that in the main they are from the classic era but there a couple of new ones in there.
1 point for the name of the artist and 1 for the song title. Usual rules apply ie no cheating (as if) ! Ill close the quiz either when its run out of steam or at latest end of Saturday.
The winner will receive a vinyl to cd transfer of an obscure prog album (to be revealed later – when I’ve done it !) + of course a copy of the latest Feedback File album (which most definitely isn’t prog) – unless you are Lando Cakes in which case a copy of the previous one.
I’m expecting nothing less than 20 points to win this given the love of the genre on the AW. Good luck !

Sandy Denny – the Fotheringay story
This thread started out as review of the Sandy Denny biography ‘Ive Always Kept A Unicorn’ – which is great by the way and well worth checking out if you have any interest of either the subject matter or just as a great insight into the British music scene of the late 60s and early 70s.
However what came out strongly (for me) in Mick Houghton’s book is a bit of a re-alignment of both Trevor Lucas and the ill-fated Fotheringay. Lucas has often been portrayed negatively – overly controlling Sandy’s artistic direction and being in part responsible for her eventual breakdown and tragic death. Actually Joe Boyd comes across as being the more manipulative and has over the years continued to heavily criticize both Lucas and Fotheringay suggesting it was nothing more than a poor man’s Fairport. Because of that (and Boyd has always been a bit of a god of good taste for me over the years) Ive never bothered with the album – or indeed the 2nd one which came out about 40 years later. Anyway this drove me to go back and listen again to their music whilst reading the book and I’m amazed how good » Continue Reading.
Leeds United
Following on from the post about the nadir of British sport I had write this.
As a Rotherham United fan I had to laugh this morning when I heard that Steve Evans (our manager as of about 2 weeks ago) had been appointed. This is the man who not many months ago turned up at the last match of the season at Elland Rd in sombrero and flip flops and said he would never work for someone like Cellino. Well it looks like he wont have to as literally minutes later it was announced that the Football League had banned Cellino. Have Leeds United finally blown a gasket – what is going on? Much as it pains me to say this but Yorkshire should have a premiership club but at this rate it wont be Leeds.
I did like Cellino’s comment on why ne appointed Evans – “I wanted them to play heavy rock football, but instead it was like Country music” – so no point Willie Nelson applying for job then after Evans leaves (in about 3 weeks time).
Any Leeds fans out there – what do you make of this ?
