Back on track with the Checkers this week. We’ve been a bit threadbare in recent weeks (possibly due to holiday season, or maybe just fat-fighting fatigue). Let’s hear where you’re at, and how you’re doing. Check in in the comments below… (I posted this earlier but the site broke for a bit and it disappeared)
Chubby Checkers Week 32
Roll up (although you should have fewer rolls by now) and sign in to Chubby Checkers. I’ve been absent this week for horrible reasons, so I’m counting on you lot to have been fighting the good flab fight for me. Update us in the comments…
Chubby Checkers Week 31
Another week gone in our quest for healthier living. Apart from the foul experience of being ‘bantzed’ at by a passing numpty when I was out exercising, it’s been a good one – how about you? Check in in the comments below…
Chubby Checkers Week 30
It’s Monday, it’s check-in day, and I’m chuffed to have hit a target this week. Check in in the comments below and share your progress, tips, and encouragement – we’re all (well, a handful of us) in this together!
Chubby Checkers Week 29
It’s time to sound the Chubby Checker klaxon. Monday is checking-in day at the Afterword’s very own weight-loss/lifestyle change/odd little ‘anythingbutWeightwatchers’ corner of the internet. Please give us a wave and an update in the comments below…
Chubby Checkers Week 28
The sun is shining here in England, summer clothes are in abundance, and I’m beginning to think I may be the only person living today that doesn’t have a tattoo (even the lollipop lady’s got one). I’ve got my shorts on and my legs out. I’ve checked, and they definitely are less chubby. How are your pins, people? Check in in the comments below…

Chubby Checkers Week 27
You know that feeling when clothes are a little ‘roomier’? Well, I’ve just discovered that the inflatable Bernie Clifton-style horse costume I am wearing tonight to a special needs club-organised Dolly Parton tribute act gig has much more wriggle room than it used to have.
Do you have any similar stories to share with fellow Chubby Checkers this week? I say similar, but mine, I suspect, was a touch specific.
Check in in the comments…
Chubby Checkers Week 26
Roll up, roll up, it’s time to share your tales tips and tales, blips and scales. The Afterword’s very own weight loss/fitness/personal challengey thingies thread heads into July, so check in in the comments below…
Chubby Checker Week 25
It’s the Monday after Glastonbury. If any of the checkers were there, you can have a free pass this week. You’ve probably got other things on your mind, like trenchfoot, anyway. The rest of us can check in in the comments.

Chubby Checkers Week 24
Good morning, checkers. As far as I’m aware, none of you are Chinese, but the number of songs with checkers in the title is limited, so I’ve chosen this one, from Mr T. Booker T, that is, not Mr T from the A-Team. That would be weird. I’d pity the fool who did that…

Mundane Punditry (Alternative Version)
The commentary/punditry during the Euro 2016 kickbladder championships has so far lived down to its dreary standards. Tonight, Mr Drakeygirl and I – possibly subconsciously inspired by the dull-cet tones of OMD’s Andy McCluskey lookeelikee Andy Townsend during tonight’s Poland Germany match – partook in the following exchange of quite mindless conversation:
ME: “Oh, you know this German manager fella you dislike – he’s all over social media because someone’s compiled a video of him scratching his balls and having a good sniff.” MR DRAKEYGIRL: “Really? Actually, that makes me like him a bit more.” ME: “Eurgh.” MR DRAKEYGIRL: “That Damned album, Strawberries, had a scratch and sniff thing with it.” ME: “Yes, but it didn’t smell of testicles.” MR DRAKEYGIRL: “It didn’t smell of strawberries, either.”
Anyone else want to share any utterly pointless drivel you’ve spouted whilst watching the Euros?
Chubby Checkers Week 23
Monday means check-in time. Get your timecard punched and clock in for the Chubby shift on the deduction line.
Chubby Checkers Week 22
Back on track (and field) after an out-of-routine couple of weeks, and levels of Chubby Checker Enthusiasm are high! Time to check in in the comments, share some tips, and keep eachother motivated…
Chubby Checkers Week 21
Apologies for the lateness this week, but the last week has been spent in HDU and on a hospital ward with my daughter after a Big Scary Op. Everything is fine, she’s home, and I can breathe again. So feel free to check in and update us in the comments below (nursing duties mean my replies might be a little erratic, though…)

Chubby Checkers Week 20
It’s time to unfurl the jib, splice the mainbrace, and sail this Chubby Checker ship off into the sunset.

Chubby Checkers Week 19
Salut, les checkers de chub! (I’ve no idea why I’ve gone French). It’s Monday, we’re checking, check in! I did something ever-so-slightly-amazing-well-to-me-it-was this week which I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing if I hadn’t embarked upon the Chubby McChubface voyage with you this year (more details in the comments). What about you? Has being onboard changed anything for you? Report in, and let us know…
Chubby Checkers Week 18
Much of the UK was blessed with glorious sunshine at the weekend and a massive cloud of beer, burger and barbecue fumes hovered above gardens. So how did the Chubby Checkers manage? Did you partake in moderation? Or did you return to old habits, unable to resist the urge to marinade yourself in alcohol then demolish the sausages? Check in in the comments below…
Chubby Checkers Week 17
It’s a bit cruel on a Bank Holiday Monday, I know, but this boat has a very slow turning circle, so the decision to lay down a weekly anchor was actually taken in 2015 and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. Principally because I never passed my maritime exams and I only really know how to steer.
In other words – please check in in the comments below.
Super Furry Animals
Venue:
Cambridge Junction
Date: 28/04/2016
Super Furry Animals were never ones for straight-faced rock, and their triumphant, surreal gig at the Cambridge Junction last night left the crowd grinning from ear to ear.
It was more than 20 years since they’d played the small venue (and a similar amount of time since I’d last seen them live), and there was a lot of Furry love in the room (I should rephrase that, it sounds deeply dubious). The tank-loving, Welsh space rockers play music that rouses the soul, and a greatest hits set from this lot was always going to be something special.
Bedecked in white boiler suits, in front of a psychedelic backdrop, framed by dry ice and old skool lasers, and holding placards demanding such things as PROLONGED APPLAUSE, the Furries were on playful form. But for all the deadpan humour (‘Shout out if you’re from somewhere obscure? No? Catchment area, then!’, a hilariously anticipatory pause and heckle back and forth before *that* line in Hello Sunshine, and Gruff Rhys taking over the Paul McCartney celery-munching duties on Receptacle For The Respectable), it was the music that took flight.
If you can open your set with this run » Continue Reading.
Super Furry Animals ticket (Cambridge Junction) going spare
Got one spare ticket to Super Furry Animals’ sell-out gig at Cambridge Junction tonight (Thursday April 28) that a friend can’t use. Anyone want it for face value (£26)? Me & Mr Drakeygirl are going, too, but don’t let that put you off…
Kathryn Williams & Astrid Williamson
Venue:
The Stables, Wavendon
Date: 26/04/2016
Tonight’s gig kicked off with an excellent set from Astrid Williamson, a Scottish singer who I’d somehow lost track of after her great debut solo album Boy For You, way back in the day. She’s clocked up another six solo albums in the proceeding two decades, and her voice has aged beautifully – deeper, but just as subtly powerful. Her set showed off her knack for writing powerful, dreamy songs, a sound not a million miles away from headliner Kathryn’s.
The two are mates, travelling around for the tour in Kathryn’s VW Polo, with the back seats down to cram in their bags and equipment, staying at fans’ homes and Air B & B – ing it. And they join up on stage too: Astrid returned for Kathryn’s set, to play piano and provide minimalist backing vocals. The pairing works well, their voices really complimenting eachother, and the keyboard adding an extra layer to Kathryn’s delicate guitar work.
But the main event, the pivot around which the evening revolves, is of course Kathryn’s compelling voice. I’ve loved her on record since she’s been making them, but somehow never seen her live before » Continue Reading.
Chubby Checkers Week 16
We’re hurtling towards the end of April, when some of us will have been doing this Chubby Checking malarkey for four months now. Are you still fired up with enthusiasm? Are you flagging? Need a pep talk?
Check in in the comments below. We gotta keep movin’…
Big Mouth – New Ex-Word-Personnel-Packed Podcast
If you’re after 50 or so minutes of very Afterword-like, affable chat, then you could do far worse than lend your lugholes to Andrew Harrison and Matt Hall’s new podcast, Big Mouth.
Episode 1, which aired on Soho Radio this morning, and has been uploaded as a podcast here, features Jude Rogers and Andrew Collins. The tagline is ‘clever talk about popular culture’ – not a million miles away from the one at the top of this site.
They discuss music, films, telly, Sandy Denny, albums you couldn’t forgive your favourite bands for, snooty record store staff, and avoiding box set spoilers, amongst other things.
Y’know, the important stuff.
Richmond Fontaine
Venue:
Bedford Esquires
Date: 23/04/2016
You Can’t Go Back If There’s Nothing To Go Back To will be Richmond Fontaine’s last album and this tour will be their final one, after 20 years together. I saw frontman and songwriter Willy Vlautin play with his other project The Delines a year or so ago (and have been greedily devouring the Richmond Fontaine back catalogue ever since), and this looked my my first and last chance to see the original band play live. A gig upstairs at Bedford Esquires, a small venue with a bar-room feel, seemed like the perfect place.
The group play a sometimes dreamy, sometimes hard-edged kind of alt country, fuelled and fanned by Vlautin’s evocative tales of the American underclass. His songs are essentially short stories: each track plunges you into a world of deftly-drawn characters. Their troubles (missing brothers, impending jail sentences, drug and alcohol addictions, dreams of a better life) are all utterly convincing. This isn’t ‘my dog died, my wife left me, and dammit my haemorrhoids have flared up again’ cliché. It’s real, it’s touching, and you see the neon-lit streets and dusty trailer parks through their eyes, and understand and feel their longing. » Continue Reading.
