New album due, touring in June 2023 (Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Dublin). Pre-sales from today, general onsale Friday. Ticket prices: eye-watering…you know the drill. I went to look on the artist pre-sale and just couldn’t justify it to myself on this occasion. Nosebleed seats £64-£97, you can guess the rest. I’m sure he’ll put on a great show, but I’m out.
RIP Robbie Coltrane
Float gently into the night…
Really sad news to wake up to. Julee Cruise has died. She will always have a place in my memories, as this glorious song graced our wedding ceremony. Thanks, Julee.
Too-Rye-Nay!
The intriguing 40th Anniversary live reworking of the LMTPH second-best album has been cancelled due to Kevin’s unfortunate but mysterious motorcycle accident. A real shame – was so looking forward to the show…even persuaded my beloved to go. The album is still coming out, though.
Wordle is sooooo last week…
This is where the cool kids hang out now!
Love the ‘Play at wrong speed’ function.
Have fun.
Rock Is Dead
Very sad news overnight of the loss of a rock icon in every sense, and a pivotal contributor to the Bowie phenomenon in particular.
Quite poetic that he passed at 72, echoing the year that everything took off for him.

More Upsetting news….
Chinnichap Rock!
Reading the Charlie Watts post, it struck me that we’ve neglected to celebrate another recently-turned octogenarian, Ms Leather Tuscadero herself, the fabulous Suzi Quatro. She is acknowledged as a significant cultural pioneer and inspiration to many of the punk and rock princesses that followed. Her own biggest hits were, of course, written and masterminded by the titans of early 70s glam, Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, and their indispensable wing-man, pop eminence-grise Mickie Most. The tsunami of hits for Suzi, Sweet, Mud and to a lesser extent Smokie and, er, Racey formed the soundtrack of my and I suspect many others’ childhoods, and I still adore the thrilling wide-eyed optimism of their brash stomping anthems…the very Menton of ‘Chinnichap RAK’ brings a Proustian rush of playgrounds, platforms and POPSWOP magazine.
Chapman, of course, went on to garner great acclaim as a producer, of Blondie in particular. Although their relationship was fractious to say the least (Chapman seems to have what clinicians now recognise as Waters’ Ego Complex) they did occasionally team up again in the 80s and created hits for Exile, Tina Turner and Toni Basil (perhaps ‘Mickey’ is a belated tribute to their erstwhile colleague).

What’s Inside A Girl? Birthday Cake!
The glorious Ivy Rorschach – Kristy Wallace to her family and friends – is (gulp!) 68 today! And in a suitably spooky coincidence, her erstwhile colleague, the late Bryan Gregory, also shared his birthday on this day.
Any love for The Cramps on here?
Too Late To Stop Now…but goddam, I wish he would!
He’s at it again with his sense of blunder, and he’s gonna take it to the judge! I’m just a bit nonplussed as to why he thinks he’s speaking on behalf of other artists. Most of those I’ve seen and heard are naturally frustrated but have adapted and tried to make the best of things by promoting safety above all and finding new ways of performing and generating income. This coming on top of his ridiculous ‘protest songs’ with the likes of that other great humanitarian Eric Clapton make me despair. it’s increasingly hard to reconcile the often sublime music to the obnoxious individual.
Calling Lodey – The Return!
I may have to revise that Album of the Year accolade for folklore…this has literally just taken my breath away. #sadoldfanboi

…And other Afterworders with taste. A great opportunity to see the Album of the Year™ being performed live in the studio. Mouse ears optional.

ATM: The National
After Aaron Dessner’s sterling collaborative role on Taylor Swift’s utterly sublime folklore, my interest in The National has been piqued. I’m start from a position of basically not knowing anything of theirs, so can any discerning Afterworders guide me towards what to snog/marry/avoid, so to speak?
Little Richard RIP
What an awful week for music…a true original and a real great. Brave, witty, and unbelievably exciting – I can’t imagine how it must have felt to see him at the time.
Scheisse! RIP Florian Schneider
In the end, much more man than machine, sadly.
Young(ish) artists in “Not Bad At All” Video Collaboration shock!
As soon as the name Miranda was mentioned, I took my leave of the ‘Big Night In’ thingy last night…but this popped up somewhere on my feed this morning, and I think as these collaborations go, this is rather good. Thoughts…?
ATM – Bluetooth Playback on Hi-fi
Hi, my new Denon receiver is Bluetooth enabled and I have paired it with my laptop. The first time I did this, the connection worked and I was able to hear playback from Spotify through my hi-fi speakers. I have tried since and it doesn’t seem to be working; the connection is showing there, but now nothing comes out of the speakers. I have tried with Spotify and also music files I have dowloaded on the laptop. When I disconnect the Bluetooth, the playback on the laptop is fine, but as soon as I try to reconnect…silence. Help! I am not a techie in any way, shape or form. I have consulted the manual and online guidance and followed the steps provided, with no joy.
I was dreaming when I wrote this…
Anyone else rather blimmin’ excited about this?
D A Pennebaker has finished his last reel
Sad news, but in fairness he enjoyed an extended Director’s Cut of a life. And he has left us a great legacy of iconic, groundbreaking films. Only last week I was able to enjoy the unearthed footage he shot of Marianne and Leonard in their Hydra idyll, which forms a major part of Nick Broomfield’s wonderful, elegaic film.
I’m almost married to Kylie
It’s my beloved wife’s birthday today…and she shares it with the fragrant La Minogue. I have a tradition of sending out a Facebook greeting to her with a Kylie tune attached; this year I selected the fabulously cool mash-up of ‘Slow’ with ‘Being Boiled’, as witnessed on last year’s poptastic ‘Golden’ Tour, and thought some of you good people would enjoy it, and perhaps share the love by posting your own faves from a surprisingly eclectic and adventurous career. C’mon, you know you can confide in me…
FYI: DONOVAN & The Fabs, Sky Arts, TONIGHT!
A bit short notice, but in half an hour (9.00pm), Sky Arts are showing a new documentary about how DONOVAN invented The Beatles and Transcendental Meditation in Rishikesh.
ATM: Van in Hull – should I stay or should I go?
In a Natalie Imbruglia stylee, I’m torn – torn, I tells ya! It’s just been announced that the prestigious opening act at the new Hull Venue will be Van the Man. This is something of a coup, and as a long-standing fan I should be really excited that he has deigned to grace us with his presence for the first time in 30-odd years. However, my fan-dom is markedly lapsed, in that I don’t think he’s actually done anything truly great since the early 90s. I’ve seen him give some truly outstanding, transcendent performances up until around the same time, but over the years the new material and live shows I’ve seen on screen have all been a real disappointment. I think the main problem I have is that the voice which was once a thing of beauty is now just a horrible bark, and the idiosyncratic mannerisms and stagecraft I once found endearing I now just find rather irritating. Adding to this the legion of stories about his perfunctory approach to performing (the clocks, etc.) I just don’t get the feeling that renewing my live acquaintance with the fella would be a rewarding experience. And yet, and yet…the residue » Continue Reading.
The Price That Fell To Earth
The Man Who Fell To Earth Deluxe Boxset absolute bargain klaxon!

My Name Is Prince –
Venue:
The O2 Arena, London
Date: 02/11/2017
When this was announced, my natural excitement was tempered by more than a degree of trepidation and cynicism about what this exhibition would be and how Prince would be represented. The decisions and motivation of his sister and the plethora of ‘relatives’ that suddenly came on the scene in the wake of his death have been the source of much consternation and, er, controversy amongst much of his hardcore fan community; so there remain fears that this, as an extension of the transformation of Paisley Park as a memorial/museum, might just be a quick and tacky cash-in job. Factor in that the curator of the exhibition is a director of Graceland, and the dollar signs seem to be shining brightly. Nonetheless, regardless of these reservations, it’s Prince for goodness’ sake, and it’s the closest I’m gonna get to upstate Minnesota in this lifetime, so of course I was always going to be there. The extension of its run over a period way beyond the original, poignantly resonant 21 days ‘due to unprecedented demand’ led me to imagine queues round the block and a crush at all the displays, but it was a » Continue Reading.
Crikey! Sean Hughes RIP
Aged 51. Cause of death, cirrhosis of the liver. Incredibly sad.
