On July 4th I’ll be in the land of the free and the home of the brave. I’m keen to watch the election night coverage and for once the time difference works in my favour. I’d like to be able to access C4, and possibly the BBC.
The VPNs I’ve had in the past were no use (Tunnel Bear, Windscribe, PIA) so I thought I’d ask the overseas Massive if they had any recommendations.
I thank y’all.

Not a vpn but I use dns4me it is incredible

Me, asking for a friend – “Does DNS allow a stroll through an Eel Market?”
Dai – ” How dare you!”

I’m interested in this as well to use on my Amazon cube.

Express VPN here. Works reliably and well – persuades BBC iPlayer to let me watch from Oz – servers in 105 countries etc etc. I pay around USD100 a year, which may not be what you want if you just want to watch one thing. It’s $12.95 a month, I don’t know if you can cancel after a month but there’s a 30-day money back guarantee.

Another vote for Express VPN here. Very, very reliable and excellent for UK channels – BBC iPlayer, C4, etc.
Only exception is ITVX which seems to be immune to VPN bypassing. I get around that by using STV – shows many past and current ITV shows (free
with ads, UK£3.99 a month ad-free)
You can iuse both Express and STV for a month and cancel but is obvs more expensive.
Like streamers, if you forget to cancel, your account will keep rolling over

ITVX works for me, although oddly the first ad that came up today was an Australian iPhone ad involving a magpie swooping on a cyclist. (Your phone won’t break if a magpie knocks you off your bike apparently.) It might be because I keep my iPad permanently connected to Docklands on the VPN and also to my UK Apple account not my Oz one.

The free with ad one works for me, too, but once I tried the subscription required ad-free version could only get sound and no video.
Now use STV player instead – you need a Scottish post code to register but that’ easy enough to get

Only VPN that I found works consistently and successfully with the BBC (who seem to have a team dedicated to spotting VPN routers) is Nord
Lodestone of Wrongness says
I should add I haven’t checked other VPN suppliers for years because Nord is so reliable , therefore the others ( for instance, I found Express next to useless re iPlayer) may well have upped their game.
mikethep says
Nord and Express are always at or near the top in computer mag surveys. I can always connect to iPlayer with Express, but sometimes the streaming is so slow as to be unwatchable. That may be unconnected with either of course.

Another Nord VPN user here as well, Though iPlayer does not work on my laptop – as you say they seem to be clued up to what look like VPN IP addresses, it strangely works on my phone.
Ch4 works fine on all devices. I found out yesterday (looking out for the Starmer/Sunak cage fight) that ITV works fine as well.
Leedsboy says
Another Nord user. I was using Tunnelbear for a while but Nord is better. More reliable and you get a good number of devices covered.
Jaygee says
Express regularly upgrade their systems to stay ahead.
Cannot fathom why BBC iPlayer only asks if you have a
Licence and not for any kind of supporting details.
BBC would bequids in if they could find a way around
the charter/copyright/royalty issues that prevents them
From monetizing the service
Vulpes Vulpes says
ProtonVPN – I use this on my OSINT laptop, it’s excellent and free.
Alternatively you could try the free VPN that is offered by the free Avast package; I’ve never experimented to see if it works with iPlayer etc. but it won’t cost anything but a little time to find out.

I use Hideaway VPN and am able to watch BBC etc from Japan using it, if I so wish.
There’s a ‘Watch UK TV’ option for that. (There’s a ‘Watch US TV’ option, too).
(Though it isn’t free. Might look into some of those!)
Feedback_File says
I use Nord – very reliable. Tried a few other in the past but had various issues. None with Nord
Jaygee says
If only Alan “Fluff” Freeman had hung on for a few more years, he could have done the voice overs for their ads
Doctor Whom says
Another option would be to install Opera, it’s free and has a VPN built in. It’s very basic but it’ll do the job, my wife has no problem accessing NHK (the Japanese equivalent of the BBC).
dai says
Actually there will probably be full coverage on BBC World News which is on US cable. Used to be anyway
fortuneight says
Thanks chaps. The C4 coverage looks strong – Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Emily Maitlis, Alastair Campbell, Rory Stewart, Cathy Newman. And Clare Balding. I’ll try a couple of the suggestions above.
