Off to meet my mates for a mini jolly boys in York in a couple of weeks. Some of us might go to the big match at Bootham Crescent where the home team take on Altrincham and I know York is a nice place for a bimble. Your usual recommendations for food , drink etc.
Ta.
Sorry can’t help but thanks for a new word. I like ‘bimble’,never heard that word before.
Bikers use it for an aimless zoom around country lanes.
There is a bar/stage/marquee called the Bimble Inn that smaller festivals can hire. Last seen at Lunar in Tanworth in Arden.
I asked for pub recommendations a few years ago and the Massive came up trumps. The Blue Bell is tiny, so may not meet your needs, but The Maltings is much bigger, a bit of a rock pub with excellent beer.
We had our honeymoon in York in 1988 and have been back loads of times. Not much in the way a Jolly Boy’s type of thing to recommend but the Rose & Crown near Warmgate do fantastic pies if that floats your boat.
I love pies! And beer in general. Oh and curries.
We are a pretty gentle mid 50’s lot as you might imagine if that’s any help with recommendations.
There are loads of great pubs in York, so have a wander and you’ll not go far wrong. The last time I visited Bootham Crescent, however, was 1980 (York City 0 Barnsley 1 – Ian Banks), so I hope it’s improved a bit since then.
If you are planning to go to one of the great pubs on the river you’d better take your snorkel.
August 1976, league cup 0-0, my first away game without parental supervision. Football special train from Bolton on Dearne!
Great little record shop in York – Earworm Records. Small, but perfectly formed.
Also had an exceptionally tasty (and well filled) pasty in York, but can’t actually remember where from (I think it was near the Market, but I could be wrong).
Another vote/recommendation for the pub down by the river. It has marks on the door showing the heights of water in recent years. I expect they’ve added another one this week.
Seconded re the comment about Earworm Records. Fantastic little shop.
There is a pasty shop near the market place but can’t remember what its called (that’s helpful!)
3 Legged Mare pub near to the Minster is a good one as is the House Of The Trembling Bells in Stonegate
Are you thinking if The House of The Trembling Madness ?
Yes I am. Apologies!
Is that the record shop with a cafe in one corner? Very nice.
The original In Harrogate has more history but Bettys is always a great afternoon tea and cakes stop.
There are two branches in York. The smaller one is quieter with shorter queues.
York v Alty – something of a top of the table clash there; could be a good one!
Well, we’re coming from Manchester so should be tasty!
If you like gin, Evil Eye is quite excellent.
We had a decent pint, and an excellent pie, at the Guy Fawkes Inn.
If nothing else, walk around the walls. When I read there there was a good display about the battle of Towton which happened nearby which was pretty awesome. A quick read about the Wars of the Roses and from the walls with a bit of mist it is atmospheric central.
Delrios is a great little family run Italian restaurant. On the way to it you pass the Micklegate Social which does a very nice breakfast.
As recommended above, the House of The Trembling Madness is worth a visit. 3, (or is it 4?) floors of quirky pub/bar. And the also mentioned Evil Eye does a mean cocktail (and has the most wonderfully themed menu)
Good time to visit Bootham Crescent – just before its turned into flats – with the club due to move to a new and no doubt soulless out-of-town stadium next season.
No shortage of better than average pubs in York but The Masons Arms, on Fishergate about three minutes walk from Clifford’s Tower, is my favourite. Good choice of beers and lovely, hearty big food in extremely generous portions. Big meaty pies with loads of gravy and fresh veg – that kind of thing . You will leave stuffed and happy.
As it’s my local city, I should be more use but sadly.. I did follow York but when it got up to £15 to watch non league football, I gave up. As for pubs, The Mickelgate Run, over the Ouse and towards the racecourse, has always been popular. I like The Last Drop Inn, in the same square as the aforementioned pasty shop; and Barnett’s next door, which will be the reason I’m there anyway!
Try Brew York on Walmgate for beer. They brew the beer on site so it’s a good pub to visit.
Then you are next to The Blue Barbakan where we ate a couple of weeks ago. A Polish restaurant with excellent pierogi. Make sure to ask for the beer menu.
York Brewery is also worth a visit. Interesting brewery tour and the guide we had several years ago had a very good dry sense of humour. York Brewery Guzzler is highly recommended.
It’s a shame Fibbers has closed down. Saw many gigs there over the years including the Stranglers which they described as one of the hottest venues they ever played in.
You will have a great time.
I didn’t know Fibbers had closed.
That’s a shame.
Plenty of lovely things here, thanks all. Will be trying some of the pubs and the Micklegate Social for brekky I reck.
Now if anyone could recommend a nice Curry House for tea on Saturday night..,
