Ever since I bought a new Macbook Air – don’t start anti Apple brigade, I have been getting hounded about my icloud storage being nearly full.
I have never bought extra storage. My new MacBook has heaqps more storage than the previous one. I assume that what I have, cloud wise is enough to keep me functional.
I download photos to a hrd drive. I don’t store music on my devices as I either stream or [play records and Cds. So I suppose this applies to all users of cloud storage. Do I really need to pay for more cloud storage?

You can check what’s using your iCloud storage from the settings menu – it gives you a breakdown by photos, video, music etc etc.
My guess is that with the new MacBook, some of the default settings share some of your folders (e.g documents, downloads) with iCloud automatically and so if you are storing a lot of stuff on the MacBook, you may be filling up your iCloud storage at the same time.
My guess too
Thanks. Will investigate.
Most of my iCloud usage is photos and music. I use Clean My Mac to get rid of duplicates and identity big old video files. I tend to prefer keeping stuff in iCloud rather than on my device as I think it’s a safer back up.
yes Clean My mac is good.
It’s a significant part of their business model to try and get you to pay for extra cloud storage. Google and Microsoft do it too.
Emails and documents don’t take up all that much space, unless they have loads of attachments. High-res pictures, video clips and music are the storage filler culprits.
Default settings from Apple, Google and Microsoft are to copy everything on your devices to the cloud. A bit of culling now and then is tedious but necessary and there may be stuff in there that you don’t actually need to keep.
I get 100g from Google for £1.59 a month which is ample and it’s incredibly useful with Google drive. I know Google are baddies too but they don’t have Microsoft’s tendancy to bloatware and Apple’s totalitarian tendancies. I use Google Docs a lot for the band and have a drive folder which everyone can access with lyrics, arrangements etc so it all works very nicely.
