As a foundation member and serial poster you’d reckon I have this posting and commenting caper down pat by now. But no.
How does one make a new comment on an existing thread that is appended after all previous comments? Not a reply to the last comment , but a new separate comment?

I think what Junior is asking about is that, especially on a small screen, sometimes if lots of people have commented on one particular comment then for some reason there seems no way to post a new comment that isn’t a reply to that mini conversation?
I feel guilty now.

No mocking here JW, that is what you said. The answer is the black box.
There is an issue where replies are only allowed up to a certain indent level, if that’s what you meant.
Yebbut, sometimes on a long thread the black box goes walkabout especially on a phone. This needs serious sorting out or else Junior may implode.
Mine appears as a ‘Leave a Reply’ box at the bottom of the thread underneath which is a black ‘Post Comment’ box.
Otherwise, I need to click on a grey ‘Reply’ box if I want to reply to a particular comment.
Just open your comment with in reply to @whoever.

Please note that certain fields are required and these are marked*. For example, *Comment. There may be other fields but I am yet to locate them. Don’t forget that the comment must also be posted. You can print out this handy reminder and keep it near you at all times. Also, you must be logged in before hand. A separate guide to logging in is available.

I think you have it back to front (as one might expect in Australia), at some point when too many replies to a particular comment in the thread have occurred the reply option disappears and there is no other option but to Post a new comment underneath that is replying to the original post in the thread.
In the old place everything would go further and further to the right.

Not particularly . My point, to reiterate, is that at times, the only option is to reply when I want to make a separate observation not a rejoinder to someone else’s comment.
And no it is separate to the the matter of shrinking boxes.
Guess i am just going to have to wait then screenshot it.

There is a thing sometimes, to give a straight answer, where there is no comment option down at the bottom. I think it may be where one has inadvertently clicked reply somewhere further up the page as can happen with touch screen while on phone. Scroll back up and cancel reply or go back up to the top and click on x comments to reload the whole shitshow (it often is). Clear? No? Have you tried logging out and logging in again? This really shouldn’t happen to a foundation member. Shameful treatment. Perhaps your privileges have been withdrawn.
Yes this happens a lot to me when on my phone
I get that a lot, because I’m left-handed, I regularly touch the reply button as I’m doomscrolling down one of the lengthy threads – because it’s on the lefthand side. Maybe there can be a lefthanders version of the Afterword? (joke).
What I find is that, instead of going back to the comment which I’m accidentally replying to, I can just swipe reply on any other comment, and the original reply moves to the new place – with any text still present and ready for posting or further fixing. It also moves to the black Post Comment box at the bottom if I press that.
Unfortunately there is a restriction with our set up on WordPress that limits the number of replies to individual Comments underneath a Post, so eventually there will be no “Reply” box visible and all you can do is reply to the original Post again (rather than a comment within the post). Clear?

Junior and I stand together wrongly accused but now found innocent of all charges. Despite all the slings and arrows flung by cruel and uncaring “friends” we were certain something was Wrong. And by God, we were Right!

Having said that , I expect having an open reply is likely to have often been the cause.
There also seems to be a glitch whereby any thread I start doesn’t attract more than about ten comments from other people. Fk this WordPress shit.

This post is in no way inferior to Junes’ epochal “Why Can’t I See The Full Subject Line In My Email Account?” thread, and shares some of that work’s palpable sense of existential dread. There’s something almost Kafkaesque – and very Beckettesque – about the individual’s struggle for freedom from a world that makes no sense; that insists we “fill boxes” and yet denies us the means, either by removing “the box” – a symbol so gravid with significance it needs no exposition here – or senselessly – even cruelly – restricting “the box” in such a way as to make over-filling inevitable. I for one applaud Junes’ bold literary intiative, with its challenging iconography, sexio-political undercurrents, and universal message.

Amusingly , I can reply but not make a separate comment to this rib tickling exchange.
Once you open a comment box anywhere above on the thread, even if you change your mind and don’t post anything there, you can’t see a “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the thread without first either posting in the box you’ve just opened or refreshing the thread in your browser.
I think that is the nub of it and I expect that is what I, and presumably many others have done.
I think we need to bring Senior Wells in at this point…
