My 8-year-old Dell 22″ LCD monitor went up in smoke this morning.
Any advice from the Massive on a decent replacement?
An extra couple of inches might be nice (no sniggering at the back).
Built-in Freeview HD tuner would be nifty to avoid occasional family viewing clashes.
Are you connecting via VGA, DVI or HDMI? If you want a tuner then most TVs don’t have VGA inputs any more and you’ll have to go for a non premium brand, something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-22L1333B-22-inch-Widescreen-1080p/dp/B00BPPAK18/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1470244524&sr=8-28&keywords=22%22+with+freeview
I use Iiyama at work. They’re ok for the money but they don’t have tuners but some models have height adjustable stands which may/may not be useful.
DVI mostly, HDMI a bit (I have a second low-power PC running 24/7 as a media server) and VGA rarely (Raspberry Pi). Not bothered about TV tuner really (I did look at a Samsung monitor years ago with one, which is no longer available).
My local store has Iiyamas but I’d really like one with two digital inputs and easy switching.
That Philips looks interesting, as does the Acer mentioned in the review.
If I went for 40″, I’d have to start an ATM: big computer desk thread.
FWIW, I have some of these. VGA, DVID & HDMI. A couple have high stands which make them good for use with a laptop

I’ve been using a Hanns-G for a while now. Good quality for the price, built-in speakers which helps cut desk clutter, all the most common connection options, and good range of adjustment in the stand: http://www.ebuyer.com/736495-hannsg-hp245hjb-23-8-ips-full-hd-monitor-hp245hjb
No tuner though.
I hope this doesn’t come across as one-upmanship as I know its stupidly expensive, but I invested a bit of a windfall recently in a Philips 40″ 4K monitor. Once you have one there’s no going back – the picture quality is superior to anything else I’ve ever seen from a PC set up and the amount of screen space is phenomenal – open a zillion bits of software and you’ll still find room for them all. Of course the down side is the £500+ cost.
If anyone IS thinking of going down this route one work of advice – don’t be tempted to buy a 4K TV and use it as a monitor as it really doesn’t work. You can get a picture of course but the restrictions of the TV as opposed to a dedicated PC monitor are likely to give you scaling issues as well as picture quality issues.
Prior to this I was using 24″ Acer 1080p monitors from PC World (or Amazon, natch) which were great for the price (c. £120?)
That’s a 40 inch monitor and a 24 inch Acer – I didn’t have 24 of them! It seems i can’t use speech marks for some reason
Could I expand on the OP’s request? (Sorry Mr fSteve – hope you don’t mind). I/we do a lot of graphics work – manipulation of photography, illustration, scans of artwork, etc, etc.
I’ve just bought what I had hoped would be a reasonably decent, used, 24″ Samsung VGA screen via eBay. It’s shite – before even setting it up to test (if I could), the connector screw for the base is shorn in half, the back of the monitor boasts a ‘repair’ sticker ‘shuts down after light use’! (Jeez, that wasn’t in their ad).
Yes, my bad, etc.
Can the massive recommend a min 24″, VGA connectable screen that is essentially good for graphics, without breaking the bank. I don’t. for example, need the new 4K generation, etc.
Most grateful, as ever, love, kisses (air kisses or course, no tongues. Oh No!) and even more Steely Dan songs to you all.
Mwah. Mwah.
This got a good review and seems pretty cheap. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-277E6EDAD-27-Inch-Monitor-1000/dp/B00UEME7IA?SubscriptionId=AKIAJYIKMNDIWUXSWCVA&tag=pcmaguk-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00UEME7IA

I only use small monitors as preview so colour reproduction isn’t a priority and I haven’t seen this but Phillips are often overlooked so probably worth investigation.
A friend has an Iiyama Prolite 27 inch monitor connected to a Mac mini. I think its an X2783HSU-B1. These have VGA and HDMI ports- friend has it connected with HDMI, and the image (1920 x 1080) looked good to me.
A useful feature is that the monitor has three (I think) USB ports, although one of them has to be plugged into the computer so that the monitor acts as a hub.
I bought this AOC monitor a couple of months back. I wanted something that allowed for VGA, HDMI and Display Port. Really pleased with it – light, thin, crisp display. There’s no tuner but I use it to display TV via iPlayer and SkyGo

Thanks, all. I’ve ordered a 24″ Philips (the smaller version of the 27″ one DaveBP suggested). DVI, HDMI & VGA with an input selection button on the front.
