Does any kind soul know what to do? I understand rice could be important . I currently just have the apple icon on the screen when I put it in its dock though the background display looks a bit dull.
Thanks in advance .

The rice thing is still a bit of a long shot as it works sometimes and fails others.
Fill a suitable container with enough (uncooked!) rice to completely immerse the iPod and just leave it in it for as long as you can (but at least a few days) . A sealable freezer bag full can work as well. If you’re lucky the rice will absorb water and dry the ‘pod out enough for it to live again.
50/50 at best, but worth a go.
I know it’s a very natural reaction to see if the iPod is doing okay or not, but this will most likely short circuit the unit, and after that there’s less of a chance of your iPod actually making it.
Unfortunately, iPods with hard drives typically do not have a very good chance at surviving after getting soaked.

@Ainsley
Thank you …I’ll dig out my Tupperware and Basmati and give it a go. Think I may have cocked it up by putting it in the dock to see if it would power up but hey ho.
And @Cozzer
Thanks too, I’ve heard decent things about them also so if the rice doesn’t work I’ll give them a call.

You could try contacting the folks here:

They have a pretty good reputation.
The Actual North says
Agree with Cozzer, the rice thing is like aromatherapy to cure cancer.

You are always lusting after big capacity mp3 players.
Have you seen this:

Actually they even have 512GB fits.

Yes, I’ve seen this, thanks. I opted to get a Nano Touch because I’ve had four (count them – four) iPod Classics die on me out here, the one I brought out about ten years back, and three replacements, one under guarantee, one through the Mac exchange for new system. I just don’t trust the damn things any more. Maybe it’s the heat – I’m always careful with them, but it gets up to 43 here. I’m really happy with the Touch (apart from the usual Mac flaming irritations). Also I do love shuffle!

I thought apple discontinued coz they cold no longer get or reliably get supplies of the ahrd drive.
Funny how this mob can. Guess it is smaller scale.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Both of my 160gb Classics have always had the shuffle function (took me a while I must admit to work out how to shuffle within a playlist rather than just albums or songs) but as you know shuffle is the work of the devil….
H.P. Saucecraft says
Ah. That was beyond me. On the Touch you just tap “shuffle all” which I can handle without too much trouble.
Mike_H says
I dropped my mobile down the loo once and it survived.
Grabbed it out of the water sharpish and removed the battery, then put it in the airing cupboard for a couple of days. Worked fine when I refitted the battery and recharged it.
Unfortunately you can’t get at the battery in an iPod without knowhow. If it was mine I would have tried to open it (insert a very thin blade between the metal rear casing and the internals and prise gently) and get rid of any water inside as first priority.

with the rice thingo best to be put somewhere constantly warm of course to encourage evaporation, but not too warm.
Moose the Mooche says
hurrrrr
H.P. Saucecraft says
Bend over, Moose. My hard drive needs evaporating.
BigJimBob says
I have a final generation classic and it shuffles like a touch
H.P. Saucecraft says
Unfortunately my Classics have shuffled off. And another thing – watching movies on the Classic was always a bit of a squint – the Touch seems like an IMX in comparison.

Buy a Fiio X1.
GCU Grey Area says
Instead of rice, you could try the dehumidfying powder or small dehumidifying units which you can buy in Poundland, or hardware shops.
Put the iPod and the powder / unit in a sealable container, and leave in the airing cupboard for a week or so.

The patient is showing signs of recovery. It has spluttered into life and plays after a fashion but there is a terrible crackling noise in between songs. Has been put back in an induced coma and back in his rice bed.
