I’m visiting Madrid with the family next week (7th-11th). We’ll be doing the standard touristy stuff but I was wondering if anyone has any off-grid recommendations along the lines of record shops and music venues. I could probably swing a gig – I hear it’s a bit of a music town. Disappointed to be missing Dan Stuart by a few days but I’ve seen him a few times recently in Glasgow. Rufus W is in town but tickets are prohibitively expensive.

Madrid is a great city to visit – sure you’ll have a great time. When we were last there didn’t discover any particular venues or music shops but had a very civilised Sunday morning at a concert by the National Orchestra of Spain at the National auditorium of music. The other visit beyond the usual art galleries etc was to the Bernebeu to see Real Madrid. Even if you’re only a casual football fan it’s quite an experience and was pretty straightforward to get tickets as I remember.
Funny you should say that about the football. Three quarters of the family aren’t fans of the beautiful came but my youngest. We we going to go to see RM v Eibar on the evening of arrival but it appears to have been moved to the Saturday evening. Some money saved there but we’ll still take him on a stadium tour. Thanks BB.
Recommend multiple visits to Thyssen Bornemisza gallery.
We encountered a pretty good second-hand record store, though query whether the prices will be better than what you will find in the UK. It was near a great local restaurant that I would recommend if I could remember the name. This might help.

We looked for the music venues and they all looked pretty mainstream.
Cafe Central is worth seeing who is on.
Thanks. Mrs 1112 agrees that that Thyssen Bornemisza should be on our itinerary.
Seems to be a decent spread of record shops and I will check out Cafe Central.
It must be getting on for 20 years since I last went but make sure to visit the Prado and the royal palace, then drift around – it’s all lovely.
Mrs F has family there I think so I could make some enquiries if you want.
Cheers Steve, It’s around 15 years since I’ve been and I do recall the Prado being amazing we will return. My wife spent her childhood in the city before moving to Andalucia for high school. Memory permitting she should be grand.
