My trusty old 120gb Classic IPod is like a pensioner. Its forgetting stuff, stopping every 5 or six songs for a sit down and won’t communicate with my music library anymore. Basically it’s shotgun behind the chicken shed time. And as the recent cessation of manufacture by Apple has driven prices to sillybolllocks levels getting another secondhand on Fleabay is a no-no
Is there a decent alternative? I rely on the big bastard for my frequent road trips round the country so, yes, I do need 17,000 songs at my disposal whilst on the mooove.
All suggestions gratefully received ect
Not an alternative, but a reinvention?

Really helped me when my old iPod was in a similar state. Got it working and syncing again, and as it had a large back they fitted an extra 80GB of memory as well. I now have a 220GB iPod and it’s awesome 🙂
I have a 160GB Classic, no problems yet and I hope for a good while but I`ve bookmarked iPodrepairs just in case, thanks badger.
For months I had the same problem, it kept cutting out, it wouldn’t sync. I tried to buy another but found the prices had skyrocketed so I made do with what I had.
Then the strangest thing happened, one of my earphones died so I went to the supermarket to get an cheap replacement and all of a sudden the ipod was fixed. It stopped cutting out and now syncs with my library. I can only assume the earphones were the problem all along and were causing it to short. It’s now working perfectly and has done for months now.
I’m not suggesting this will help you but try different earphones and see if it makes any difference.
When I faced a similar puzzle, I ended up uploading must of my music to Google Play, which allows you to store up to 50,000 tracks online. It takes a bit of time to do but once complete, you can register several different devices to play your music. As long as your got an Internet connection, you can pay all your favourite Ed Sheeran tracks!
A lot of more recent smartphones can take up to 128GB micro SD cards, which is the route I intend to take in a few months when my current contract is up.
Fiio X1, £89. Takes 128GB micro SD card and sounds better than iPod.
This sounds very promising. Would I have to recreate my iTunes library elsewhere?
I think theoretically you can use MediaMonkey to put a faux iTunes library together.
Nothing theoretical about it. MediaMonkey, Winamp and no doubt many others allow you to tweak your library, sync, and customise your view of our collection perfectly well. I’ve never touched iTunes and don’t intend to.
I meant that if you’re used to iTunes you can use MM in a way that it actually looks like iTunes. I’m told.
That looks very good.
I truly love my 160gb Ipod Classic. It’s just the ideal thing for me.
I will miss it when it eventually conks.
That Filo looks the absolute canine’s clacks should the need arise. Lovely.
The Fiio X3 is in the process of being upgraded to the same scroll wheel interface as the X1. It also has a better DAC + more powerful headphone amp (to drive over-the-ear cans to deafening levels) + separate digital / line out connector + can be used as a USB DAC + native DSD playback (if anyone cares about that).
Launches in April at $100 more than the X1. The old X3 was £159, so the price probably won’t change.
The old X3 was pretty much the benchmark for reasonably-priced “audiophile” players.
The fiio X11 got a really good review on the TWIT network’s “Before You Buy” review show. Worth looking up

Another vote for iPodrepairs – they got my old 80gb up and running again and it’s still going strong.
More kudos for iPod Repairs.
My 160gb died the day after Apple’s announcement, and the prices had doubled. Who knew the little rascals followed the news and could react accordingly?
iPod Repairs did the job excellently.
Large storage devices have really fallen from favour as “most people” listen to music on their phones. I can’t go for that not least because that relies on a decent 3g connection and having a decent data plan, decent battery life and half decent sound from a mobile phone…a pipedream.
The fact that iPod classics go for silly money speaks volumes about the haste with which these devices have been pulled and the fact that the crappy phones and networks simply cannot support the myth of music on demand. Music is too important to me to trust to the dickheads that now call themselves “EE”.
I’ve worked my way through a couple of Sandisk Sansa Clips which are tiny, very good value and take SC cards …and sound great but are just not very durable ..the headphone sockets work loose far to easily sadly.
I’ve now got one of these

It’s ace, sounds amazing and you can add lotsa storage on SD cards. Adding music is drag & drop but if you like the iTunes sync and you’ve grown used to the slick the iPod interface it has a bit of a steep learning curve to use and it’s the size of an old school ipod so not for the fashion conscious (which I am not).
I shot in and bought myself a new iPod Classic the day they announced – they were selling them off on Amazon. With a heavy heart I might add, as I’d like to de Apple my world, but it seems to be the only one around till I saw the Filo. Removing that execrable pile of shit known as iTunes from my world would be wonderful. mind you, having albums split into many mini album of two or three tracks is great* – it makes it look like you’ve got loads more than you actually have.
* it isn’t
If you are feeling flush then you could try one of these……

Only £950 to you sir, but it does come with 128GB built in and expandable with a 128GB SD card.
I have actually listened to this at a Sony launch event here in Singapore, both with standard in ear buds and high end cans via a headphone amp. It does sound absolutely gorgeous, but at that price it should do…..
The priorities for me in a music player are decent battery life, bluetooth (for car and, latterly, bluetooth headphones) and wifi. All of my songs are in the cloud so I can download with wifi (or a phone signal as my music player is also my phone). I also have spotify so any album I want to listen to I can download as well. I just need to be slightly organised (I often spend the last couple of minutes at work downloading a couple of albums to listen to on the way home).
I have a old click wheel iPod and an iPod touch but I don’t use them. I thought they were irreplaceable until I replaced them with a phone that did it all and more.
But as you said, only cunts wear Bluetooth headsets
Ah, I said that? It’s only true on trains and walking in central London. I think you’d be fine not doing that. I think its too late for me though. Most people have realised.
