I will soon be setting up a new business venture … vaguely speaking its preserves (jam chutney etc) but I want to make some beer mustards.
Only problem is I’m tee total.
Can you suggest a beer (not lager) that’s great tasting, full bodied and available in the supermarket?
Maybe a bitter or porter?
TIA
Tring Brewery used to have recipes involving beer on their website so at least they’ve thought about it. A nice brown ale would be good so why not Newcastle Brown?
I second the Newcastle Brown Ale choice … sounds marvellous cutting through mustard. And while you’re there, bung it through some chutney too
Yep I certainly will … helps it’s a well known brand.
There are so many…
But if you want a bitter available in the supermarket, Abbotts Ale, Bishops Finger, Old Spotted Hen & London Pride are 4 of my favourites that are readily available when I’m in the UK. Nut brown and malty.
Seconded. I was about to mention Abbott & London Pride myself. Bishop’s Finger would possibly be even better.
That’s Old Speckled Hen you want, rather than Spotted, I think you’ll find.
Those sports cars are sometimes hard to tell apart.
All of those would het my vote.
All of those would get my vote.
Poss the one with the best name might get the edge
Thanks guys tbh that’s maybe enough to be getting on with thx for the trings tip … will look at a guiness style one too
Timothy Taylors Landlord – a lovely pint on draft, passable in the bottle, but should offer the flavour depth you’re looking for.
Doom Bar – can’t go wrong with it
There is now ‘Dark Landlord’ I asked “what’s the difference between Landlord and Dark Landlord?” “It’s like Landlord but darker”
It appears it’s just Ram Tam renamed.
As I recall Ram Tam was just Landlord with caramel added to darken it.
So it is/was as I’ve just read.
My excuse is I don’t drink much beer any more.
Back in the 80s at uni in Leeds, Ram Tam was like gold dust. A good night if you found some
Tribute from St Austell Brewery.
There you go.
Slightly OP but the nicest beer I’ve had for ages was a few pints of Kettering’s Potbelly Brewery Best. Delicious stuff, where you think “I could drink this till I pop”. Proper beer, non of your “notes of grapefruit and pine sap” rubbish.
They do takeaway packs and have fine looking tours I intend to try.

Guinness 0. Its a game changer.
Keep hearing that … I stopped drinking 11 years ago but do have the occasional zero … I need to try guiness I think
Agree about Guinness 0. Even my Irish Guinness drinking mates agree.
Thirded.
Harvey’s of Lewes. One of the last few family breweries left in the land.
I like Havey’s a lot but they don’t sell through supermarkets, only independents.
A quick plug for Hepworth’s of Pullborough and The Long Man Brewery. Hepworth’s Sussex is lovely and all their beers are gluten free too. Sadly, I’m on the zero beers at the moment (blood pressure) but they’re bringing out a zero stout and an IPA soon which I hope will be as good as their regular beers.
Of course you need to bring a few bottom notes to your mustards. I’ve just seen this so I think this should satisfy your needs.
Can’t recall your twenty, @Clive, but if you can get hold of any, the Bristol Beer Factory do a really lovely porter called simply ‘Milk Stout’ – that would do the job nicely. It would be a neat niche variation on the inevitable Guinness-based path.
