I have a personal email address and website package from IONOS. I only use the email really and have accounts set up for immediate family. Overall the service is good but it costs £115 per year and I’m only using the mail function.
Is there a cheaper way to have my domain hosted just for email? Or should I bin it and use my gmail or apple mail instead?
Views most welcome.
Possibly not the answer you’re looking for but we own our business domain and route email through gmail for business. Cost is about £4 per month per email address. Whatever else I may feel about Google, this has been absolutely bulletproof. Someone with more IT knowledge may be able to advise further but I assume it is enough to own the domain (we didn’t create our website ourselves so knowledge is limited).

I’m in the same position as Leedsboy – those cheap hostings I used to have with 123-reg and the like are no longer so inexpensive. I have a handful of websites written in pure HTML about 20 years ago – a few kB at best.
So I’m interested to know if I can change to something lower-cost while maintaining the email accounts.
I just use BTmail which comes with the broadband. I used to have a domain for my company when I was freelance which I’ve closed now but it went from unlimited addresses overnight to one address and pay for extra ones. I also have Gmail which I use for a few things – bulk mailing gets blocked by BT but Gmail doesn’t care.
Sure, if you like GMail (I do), just transfer the domain name to a reliable registrar (I use gandi, but it doesn’t matter) and then redirect all mail coming into the domain to your GMail account behind the scenes – it’s pretty easy to set up. I’ve had this arrangement almost since GMail was launched. You can set outgoing mail from GMail to come from the domain name. Cost for the domain name registration at most registrars should only be a tenner a year, and you can use the free GMail.
What’s the benefit of that over just using Gmail?
If it is anything like me, ‘cos I don’t want to change my family email addresses to Gmail ones.
But I don’t want to pay for website hosting I don’t use, either.
I’m up to my ears in BTmail but apathetically planning an alternative. I’ve already got a Gmail account but only for use with Google.
It means you can change GMail for another service at a later date, should you wish to, without changing your public email address. I’ve always set people up with intermediate email addresses like this, it makes life so much easier should your email provider close down, become inconvenient or just be superseded by something better. Also, the intermediate email address on your domain looks more professional than having a Hotmail account or whatever, if that’s something you care about.
This is why. I’ve had the same email address for 10 or more years and I don’t want to change it.
Will give Gandi a look. Thanks.
