In a bid to out-bore Twang’s USB drive thread, this morning the door hinges on my Indesit dishwasher snapped off. Time for a replacement. Integrated (we have a cupboard door to put on the front) and not silly money. Suggestions, please.

Um…A bottle of Fairy Liquid and some elbow grease.
Ahem, so you prefer the analog method?
I say, steady on!
Pah, fairy liquid. Aldi’s finest – Magnum – exactly the same, cheaper and lasts ages.
Or a wife maybe? (Obviously mine isn’t reading this otherwise I wouldn’t be able to type)
Have a look at Blomberg (or Bloomberg can’t remember as I’m at work)
Very good, very quiet with excellent eco ratings – we’ve had one for about 9 months & it is all we could want from such a device.
According to the ‘bloke down the shop who’s in the know’ Blomberg, who are German are muscling in on Bosch’s territory (they are made in Turkey in German factories) but in order to establish themselves in households as opposed to more industrial uses the price is deliberately competitive in comparison – presumably, once they become a houshold name with a bit of prestige, the prices will creep up steadily.
Recommended.
The last few places I’ve lived have all had Neff dishwashers (all integrated). They’re always been absolutely fine. (Does anyone get delighted and thrilled with their dishwasher? I think “fine” is about as enthusiastic as you’re going to get).
We had a NEF for 7 years at the last house, no trouble. Our 2 1/2 year old NEF at our current house had to be repaired recently. The independent engineer said that the leak seemed to be a design fault as NEF would have taken it apart and fitted a modification kit, had it been under guarantee. He sealed it with industrial mastic and it has been fine so far.
Are dishwashers so commonplace these days? In my 55 years I’ve never lived in a house that had one. I do all the dishes here – gives me a chance to listen to podcasts or Radio National programs I’d probably never hear otherwise.
When my wife and I moved out of our first flat together into a house, I swore that we would have a dishwasher. 17 years later I still wouldn’t be without one. They use less water and generally wash the dishes better. We did say that it was quite nice to chat over the dishes while ours was being repaired but that was only for a couple of days.
My Dad used to spend hours doing the dishes and listen to the radio. Mum reckoned it was so he didn’t have to talk to anyone else.
Well if I had limited space then I’d favour a dishwasher over a washing machine. I could easily save up my washing and take it to the laundrette once a week but the equivalent for dishes doesn’t seem to be available.

Here in Sweden it’s the tradition to rinse all cutlery and crockery VERY THOROUGHLY before putting them in the dishwasher.
Putting plates that have any leftovers left on them in the dishwasher is a social faux pas of gigantic proportions.
So we more or less wash up everything twice. Hmmmm…
My Italian aunt did exactly the same, but with her it was obsessive cleanliness (she cleaned the kitchen whilst she was cooking) rather than any sense of cultural conformity. My sister’s dog has first dibs on cleaning the plates before they go into the dishwasher, he does a very thorough job.
Rinse or no rinse is as divisive a topic of conversation as house prices.
Scrape, not rinse.
Get some dogs. Leave dishes on floor – hey presto!
We bought a Bosch. Incredibly quiet-have to put my ear to the door to establish it is going.
A bit small capacity wise .
Got a tray at the top for cutlery so they drain properly – if the frigging rest of the household would put them in properly.
Thanks, all. John Lewis will be delivering a Neff on Friday. I joined Which for £1, read all the reviews, it came down to Bosch or Neff, JL had £70 off the Neff and will take the old one away for free.
How exciting. Or not…
I think ATM is more likely to require a shower than a dishwasher. And also probably a checkup at the GUM clinic.
