Discogs if nothing else has meant that I can give up vinyl that scores ‘149 from sale from 0.50p’ to Oxfam with a clear conscience that they’re not getting say the value of a first pressing of Surrealistic Pillow. Now if only there was such a site for comics, as the space squeeze chez Moles (more later) means that I am trying to slim down the comic collection. It’s clear that my Sandman no 1 is worth a lot, Hellblazer no 1 quite a bit. But is Cheval Noir nos 1-4 (no 1 currently listed on sale on ebay for £21) worth that or in fact 50p. I have no Golden Age or Silver Age superhero stuff but mainly indie/Vertigo style titles from the 80s. Any suggestions as to how I can get the stuff valued including with a dealer I’m happy to sell too. Can’t see anyone in Brum in terms of shops you could like walk into and ask them for an opinion.

This is partly because I can see that ebay is a much less obvious route for comics than for music in terms of valuing. Currently I have a run of a DC horror title called Wasteland on sale on ebay for a third of what one seller has listed their run at, but it has 10 views and no watches. So don’t feel, unless I want to list that Sandman no 1 starting at 99p, that ebay is the way to go. Positive experiences of ebay and comics with tips welcome though.
I’ve sold some Walking Dead issues on eBay for £30-£40 each, which I was happy with. It was partly luck in that I cashed in at the right time – I get the sense the fervour has died down a bit now – but also thanks to working on the listing a bit. I had bit of a dig about to see what a reasonable price was, and set a starting price a bit below that. Ebay let you have about a dozen photos free, so use them to illustrate front cover, back cover, spine, random spread from inside, etc to allow people to gauge condition, as well as one of the indicia to make it clear what printing you’ve got.
Ah yes my sense is ebay is fine for moving at a good price comics that have some heat around them. But for more niche back catalogue (some of which is potentially very valuable eg Miracleman 16 which is listed for £80.00) most of the listings appear to be by shops themselves which I think are content to let the listings lie, Amazon style, on file for years until some sucker comes along to actually pay such a price. I’d like to move stuff on in months.
I’m a member of various FB comic groups and this kind of question is often asked.
The answers are usually:
1. Check E Bay recently sold items for an idea of what you might get.
2. Sell the whole lot to a dealer but expect to get less than they’re worth
3. Sell individually but expect to be left with a lot of unwanted items once the hot titles have gone.
I’ve seen some very expensive items sold on FB. Well worth a look if you haven’t already.
all good thoughts @badartdog and @kid-dynamite I think that looking at the recently sold is a good tip. Don’t do FB so not a starter there, but I think if I do end up Oxfamming hopefully it will be the ones only worth 50p anyway.
Let me know your seller name, @moselymoles and I’ll keep an eye on your sales. I tend to buy silver age stuff from a couple of trusted sellers on FB.
I’ve sold trades and GNs on eBay in the past but not so many single issues or collections. Those I have sold have tended to fall a little short of what I was hoping for, but not by that much.
Should’ve been @moseleymoles
Out of interest, is my treasured copy of issue 1 of “Magnus – Robot Fighter 4000AD” from about 1959 – I think the publisher is Gold Key comics or similar – worth very much? It’s in reasonable condition for its age.
I had a quick look on ebay but the nearest I could find was a second issue on sale at the best part of £40, price slashed from £70.
Hmmm, I’ll be hanging on to it for a while yet then! Thanks.
I’m sure you must be familiar with Nostalgia and Comics in town?
It’s next to Richer Sounds.
Isn’t it part of Forbidden Planet, and dont they sell only rather than buy second-hand?
Sorry, I’m not sure. My Brum knowledge is out of date, having not lived there since 1989.
