Setting Sons deluxe from The Jam is currently cheap on Amazon (around 30 quid).

Edit, you can get the Tull`s set for around £20, great value also!
I concur with the Slade box. My other recent purchases of boxsets at ridiculously low prices include Siouxsie & The Banshees album sets Vols 1 & 2, presented in lovely boxes for around £16 each; the (almost) complete Leonard Cohen collection (everything apart from the last two), £23ish; the Frank Sinatra Capitol albums set for which I paid the princely sum of £12; complete ABBA albums for £25ish; and earlier purchases such as The Waterboys’ Fisherman’s Box, Simple Minds’ 5×5, The Jam complete works in a lovely coffee-table book and Pet Shop Boys’ b-side boxsets – all bargains
XTC’s ‘polarity-corrected’ Skylarking on 2 x 45rpm vinyl, comes with CD in a lovely box with 12″ booklet. Peak vinyl indeed.

Well if the reference point is the mate and your girlfriend I’d recommend a best of Ric Ocasek’s Cars. Soundtrack to a miserable part of my life.
Andwhat the Lode says may be true but ignores the fact that a gift voucher is there for the indulgent purchase. You may well not listen to it all the way through or listen to it very often ( most of my collection) but it’s there sitting on the shelf and you know it’s there.
For the traditional Crossroads or Good Vibrations style box set I tend to concur. Except many of the recommendations on here are for boxes of proper albums which are a very different beast. Cheaper for a start.

Why not get yourself a few of those cheap 5-CD “Original Album Series”/”5 Classic Albums”/”Original Album Classics” boxes? At about a tenner each you’d end up with 50 albums for your £50 quid.
