I have a brand new iPadPro. M4 chip, running OS 17.5.1. A thing of beauty. A much diminished bank balance. And a growing sense of frustration as my Windows 11 desktop PC and the my new toy simply won’t speak to each other.
Plug the new iPad in to the PC and the PC pings in recognition, and a pop up message shows asking me what do I want to do when I connect. Clicking on it results in nothing. The iPad asks me if I trust the PC and then prompts for the pin number, which I input. And then a big nothing. Tried different USB ports on the PC and a different lead. Nada.
Tried my iPhone and my old iPad. Greeted by Apple Devices like an old friend.
What gives? Any, all ideas welcomed gratefully.
Check both devices are updated (your iPad even straight out of the box may not be on Catalina 17.4 or whatever the latest version is).
Shut down both devices, say “Please, please” for ten seconds then reboot.
If that still fails, contact Apple Help who are indeed most helpful.
ps I’ve been a Mac denier for years (too expensive, not as fast as a Chromebook etc). I was Wrong. Mrs W has a brand-new MacBook Pro M4 – ridiculous money but what a machine! A thing of beauty indeed. I want one, I want one!
All of a sudden you are a Lodestone of Rightness.
What, really, does it do that sets it apart from a reasonable spec new laptop? Genuine question.
Lightning fast, stunning display, brilliantly responsive keyboard, lightweight, keeps cool, looks cool.
For the ordinary everyday non-professional user, is it worth all that dosh? Probably not. I want one, I want one!
Has anyone mentioned the Apple Vision Pro yet? Available to buy in UK (but not for sale in Italy yet) for the price of just three MacBook Pro M4s. With the Apple Vision Pro you can interact with dinosaurs.
You can do that right here, for free…(boom-tish!)

It’s likely your PC hasn’t got the very latest Apple drivers installed, and so doesn’t recognise the new model of iPad. Updating iTunes should fix this.
Thanks – there does seem to be either a driver problem or Apple’s Mobile Service not running (it’s now disappeared altogether) but I’ve been unable to make much progress.
The driver shows as up to date, as does iTunes. Because I downloaded it from the Microsoft store, it doesn’t show up in the list of programs I can delete, and when I attempted to install a rolled back version, it refused to run because it detected a more recent library. I can right click on the iTunes icon, and it says it’s uninstalled but it’s instantaneous which I assume means it’s just removed the icons from the relevant menus.
Most of the help articles say uninstall iTunes (if only I could) and use Apple Devices instead (if only I could).
Because I can’t leave this kind of thing alone, I fired up an old Windows 10 laptop, installed Apple Devices and then tried to connect to the new iPad. It actually connected but refused to synch and threw a variety of error messages, although I did manage to move some files across. I suppose it counts as a workaround but its a total ball ache.
I can’t decide who to hold in contempt here, so I’m going 50/50 Apple and Microsoft.
Apple has little interest in connecting with non Apple machines. Their solution would be to buy an Apple desktop too.
Not my experience but maybe I struck lucky with my new best friend, Sandy from Newcastle….
Apple devices (iPhones and iPads) are very much the corporate device of choice for phones and tablets and have to play nicely with windows devices – which they do.
