Just today I visited Tower Records in Shibuya Tokyo, supposedly the largest CD shop in the world, and I was underwhelmed. In the genres I was interested in, Rock, Soul, Funk, selection was pretty weak and prices were insane. I think the CD is well and truly dead.
How can it be dead when it is outstripping Vinyl sales massively in terms of units and vinyl is having a massive resurgence?
I think it is called media manipulation.
There is good article at http://www.supedeluxedition.com if anyone is interested.
They both remain relatively marginal in the face of the growth in streaming “Streaming now makes up more than 88% of all music sales in the U.K., compared to 64% five years ago, with physical formats accounting for 9.4% of today’s market, according to labels trade body BPI, which released its year-end listening figures last week.
Billboard
Given that CDs are a fraction of the price of LPs and there are way more CD players knocking around than turntables, it’s hardly surprising the format’s sales and revenues dwarf those of vinyl.
Effectively the cockroaches of the technological world, record companies will keep flogging both formats for as long as there is money to be made or until the last AWer shuffles off this mortal coil
At the risk of repeating myself CD sales are still going down but the rate of decline is slowing. Vinyl sales are still going up, so in countries such as the UK the gap is closing. And in some countries e.g. USA, vinyl sales in quantities are now higher than CDs.
Perhaps we can have another thread on this next week. It’s vital we keep on top of this fast moving story. I’ve been buying masses of CDs so this information must be bogus.
Threads about the numbers of CDs sold are outstripping threads about the number of LPs sold, or they aren’t. Does people talking about this IRL count as streaming? How do we monetise that, preferably in a way that doesn’t provide a viable income for anyone who does the actual speaking?
My local branch of HMV stocks about 3 CDs but has acres of floor space dedicated to massively overpriced vinyl. I’ve never really understood why it has become fashionable to love one format but revile the other. Whatever happened to the cassette revival? I’m sure I’ve got some old wax cylinders lying around somewhere…..
Greetings one and all, by the way. I’m newer than a pin, and fresher than a daisy.
The cassette revival has been gathering pace: 100,000 sold last year.
It was a few years ago I read the last tape manufacturer (BASF?) were closing their factory, so I don’t know where the blanks are coming from. Is someone buying them from chaazas and putting sellotape over the punch-outs?
I miss my cassettes… I had two separate car thefts where I lost half my collection. Fortunately, I also have a vinyl and CD of How Will the Wolf Survive?
As seen on several other threads, CD sales were actually down 7% but revenue was up. That is a confusing article.
‘The kids’ are getting into CDs?
Here we go again. The great big whirligig turns.
Seriously I hope this is true because charity shops will do well.
…. assuming that they want to show off a collection of Busted CD singles

Physical sales are roughly 2:1 CD to vinyl, but vinyl revenues are higher (due to higher prices). Hence the recent confusing headlines.
Thanks for the clarification, F
Thanks also for all your advice on soundbars a few months back

Yes there have been 3 similar threads in the last month or so.
Only a few too many, to be fair.
Are AW threads on this subject a growth area? Or are they too set to decline?

“The Cockroaches of the Technological World” – TMFTL
The other threads were all about how brilliant LPs are. This one is lauding the virtues of CDs.
TOTALLY DIFFERENT TOPIC!!!

@everygoodboydeservesfruita
I’ve got it on cassette if you want the full set??
Cassettes are also making a comeback!
This prompted me to pull my vinyl copy of How Will the Wolf Survive? down off the Kallax.
By crikey, how can it be 40 years old already?
Bloody hell @fentonsteve
It can’t be, surely?
