I’m apparently behind another 1.5 million people in watching this. Apart from the obviously sexist “My, Lorde sure has grown up” I am almost lost for words. Fans of Kate Bush and Bjork start queuing over there ( I’m no fan of either) but that aside I really have no idea what I think of this – except it really is a truly astonishing performance. Can’t wait for the album

I am very pleased that she is playing Roskilde this summer. Top of my Must See list. I suspect the gig will be something very special.
Personally, I think she’s looking ruff.
I’m here all week.
Idiosyncratic female – Kate Bush.
That said, the song, and the backing singers, are very of the Bush mode. I await the album with interest
That gave me shivers. Can’t wait for the album.
What did you find astonishing about it?
Oh, pretty much everything…
(Steps back in amazement)
A dissenter here, I’m afraid. Maybe a studio version would be better but her voice there was struggling to hit that low range. I thought the song itself sounded a bit uninspiring, although I confess to a little frisson of excitement when the acid house style piano kicked in. The emoting and staring into the camera I found a bit embarrassing, I’m afraid.
I’m not averse to an astonishing female singer. Kate Bush singing Wuthering Heights was astonishing. Sia singing Chandelier was astonishing. La Roux singing Bulletproof was astonishing. But this is the first time I’ve heard Lorde and… hm… nah.
Yup. Very intense and all that, but too flat melodically
Cowslip and Ainsley see me after class
You’ll be seeing me too, I’m afraid, Mr Wrongness sir. Not feeling it. Seemed a little forced and contrived.
Me too. Unimpressed. Sod traipsing off to see the Bonkers Magnet after class; let’s all go behind the bike shed and smoke a tab, it’ll be more exciting than this dull woman yelling.
It’s going to be a bit crowded in there! I am still completely unsure of what I think about the new Lorde and have the feeling she is moving into superstardom which, of course, means nobody on here will admit to liking her.
Saying all that, Vulpes and Maddox you are both so utterly, utterly Wrong.
She’s certainly in the fast lane to fame. She is one of the headliners for Roskilde and will be playing one of the bigger stages in front of either 10,000 on the Arena Stage or 60,000 plus on the Orange stage. That is a scary amount of pressure for someone who is quite young and has had such a short career.
Then again, I remember seeing Band of Horses on the Arena stage a few years ago. They had never played to an audience of that size and their gobs were visibly smacked. They then played a blinder of a set and made a lot of new fans. I suspect Lorde will do likewise.
She did a live version of this too.
I love her.
I am a bit worried now, this is getting a bit too Tiggerlion for my liking. https://youtu.be/86s_1hpX4Yc
I feel your pain. 😕
It’s taken me all day to figure out what the chorus reminds me of and I’ve finally got it – Sense by the Lightning Seeds, specifically the bit that goes “The more you get, the more you want / The only reason is just because”.
Anyway I love Lorde but I’m still undecided about this. I keep expecting the Sense bit to build to a bigger chorus.
Oh! You mean like a song structure? Silly goose!
I love Lorde but even though there’s a lot to like about this song, I can’t get 100 per cent behind it. Firstly, there’s the bed-uh-rewm line (so perfectly skewered by MB), but the main thing for me is the disconnect between what she’s singing about and the way she’s singing it. It’s like hearing the lyrics to Holocaust by Big Star sung to the tune of Happy Talk.
Not sure I understand your references but I think I agree…
This has been an earworm for me the last week or so. I love this performance.
