I’m off on a tangent here but I have small mental list of movies that are more impressive now than when they were first released. It consists of…
The King of Comedy
The Truman Show
Network
All with a common thread of fame and television, the writer of each now seem psychic.
This is a quote from Network which came out in 1976 long before anyone ever heard the phrase “Reality TV”
This is a TV program director talking about ideas for new shows. It was literally laughable back in the 70’s. Is not at all far-fetched now.
Look, we’ve got a bunch of hobgoblin radicals called the Ecumenical Liberation Army who go around taking home movies of themselves robbing banks. Now, maybe they’ll take movies of themselves kidnapping heiresses, hijacking 747s, bombing bridges, assassinating ambassadors. We’d open each week’s segment with their authentic footage, hire a couple of writers to write a story behind that footage, and we’ve got ourselves a series.
With the election coming up I find I can’t get Billy Bragg’s Between the Wars out of my head especially the line “and I’ll give my consent to any government that does not deny a man a living wage”. So many songs on those first 2 albums make me feel not much has really changed since the early 80s.
Funny, I was thinking exactly that today about this.

I would add Filthy Rich & Catflap. In which the main character’s slender claims to fame leads to a preposterous sense of entitlement.
“I once did the continuity links on TVS. I don’t see why I should have to pay for my food!”
Network has an amazing script.
This speech from Ned Beatty is extraordinary:
Fortunate Son – great, great song.
