Same and for the same reason. It really shouldn’t be like this – voting for the least worst option on a single issue with the parliament being elected to has no say in anyway.
Yup – postal vote so have done so.
I understand the LD/Green votes for Remain. I’m voting Labour not only for tribal reasons but because my local MEP is Richard Corbett, who is excellent (and a Remainer).
(yes I understand tactical voting, and the list system but I couldn’t not vote for him)
In my 50 or so years of voting, I cannot recall a more pointless election or a more derided political class. I’m in the South East so Nigel Farage is a candidate, but that’s not the problem. I tried holding my nose as I studied my postal ballot but it didn’t help. I just can’t do it, my friends. I just can’t. For the first time ever, I will not vote.
No, but only because I’m in Ukraine, a country that has just sworn in a comedian as president. My postal vote went to the Greens, because I think we have to start preparing for what comes next after the inevitable catastrophe of the next few years. If Labour had any kind of cogent position and a capable leader I’d have stayed with them. But to be honest these elections don’t mean a hill of beans in the context of what’s going to happen in the next couple of weeks
Yep, same and same. I was out canvassing for the LDs last night and we did about 30 houses of whom all were supporting the LDs other than one “I’ve never voted in my life and I’m not starting now”, one Labour (because he agrees with Corbyn on leaving the EU), one Change and one Brexit. No Tories at all. First time I’ve done it actually but the way to keep the Brexit lot out is to consolidate votes against them. Not voting tactically in this election is a vote for Farage.
Yes….because my grandfather fought in France in 1940and was evacuated at Dunkirk. Posted to north africa later that year he fought at Sidi Barani and later still at El Alamien.
Yet later whilst fighting in Italy he was wounded in the leg, resulting in a limp he carried for the rest of his life.
A proper hard nut…in his late 60s a local dick took the piss out of his limp….he decked him.
My granddad had to bury the bodies at Belsen. He said the thing that stayed with him was the smell, and the fact that no amount of lime could cover it.
I’ve spoiled occasionally, but I’ve always shown up. It’s the least we owe them.
No. I understand the argument (from Fish, above) about not taking voting for granted, but I live in NI and our political class is even more bereft of integrity than in Great Britain. The regional assembly has not sat for over 2 years while 90 members have received (until recently) full salaries and are currently still receiving substantial parts of those salaries. All involved are either bigots or salaried mediocrities. The same gang of parties and in many cases individuals currently ‘in’ that non-existent assembly are running as MEPs. They can all go to hell.
I voted by post last week and also voted Lib Dem. I checked the tactical voting website first, but it just told me to vote for who I was going to vote for anyway!
The rise of the far right is just downright scary. For years we’ve watched the documentaries about the war and wondered how Germany ended up as it did. We live in much more enlightened times these days, but we’ve still got to where we are now and, whatever happens, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
Stupidity seems to be a badge of honour and the acceptance of things that are just plain wrong beggars belief. How can the result of a referendum that was based on lies be declared set in stone. How can a party stand for office with absolutely no manifesto. How can a party be standing in an election with their only point being they want us out of the thing they are hoping to be democratically elected to because it is undemocratic?!?
But most of all I am just staggered that the people and communities who stand to lose the most if we leave the EU are the ones that have been convinced to vote for it, and by the people that have caused most of the problems that led to their decision in the first place and who don’t give a flying hoot about what happens to them afterwards.
Here in the south of Italy people are voting in droves for the repulsive piece of shit that is Matteo Salvini. A man who led the anti-Southern party Lega Nord and spent years insulting southerners as dirty and lazy. It beggars belief. Why on earth would they vote for someone who so clearly hates them? Cos he hates immigrants even more, that’s why. (Not nice white immigrants from rich countries, like me, obvs.)
Depressing times. Remember when we thought Dubya, Berlusconi, Cameron were as bad as things could get? Little did we know that Trump, Salvini and Boris Farage-Mogg were waiting in the wings.
Green here, by post – in part to honour Keith Taylor, my brother-in-law, who has served valiantly as a Green MEP for the SE since 2010 and has had to put up with Farage’s shenanigans all that time (when he bothered to turn up).
Cost me 20 quid postage to make sure my vote arrived in time – note to self, must organise proxy next time.
Clearly the BP are going to run away with this election, although whether the complexities of M. do Hondt’s system will limit the numbers of BP MEPs I’m not clever enough to say. Whoever takes over from the Tin Lady would be very wise not to call a general election yet awhile, it seems to me. Maybe the bubble will burst, like the UKIP bubble did.
Already voted postally – and as has already been said, I am well aware of the privilege of being able to use that hard won vote when elections of all kinds come around -no excuse not to vote – especially this one – Brexit Fantasists and Far Right scum are relying on these people who “can’t be bothered” to gain ground and get a platform in this one – if you’re not sure who to vote for at least vote against actual Fascists
Another Labour voter turning to the Lib Dem’s this time. Farage is clearly going to be the biggest party, and it feels most important in this election to rack up unambiguous ‘Remain’ votes to avoid him claiming the poll as evidence that the country just wants to leave as quickly and simply as possible.
Worth saying that UKIP did well in the last Euro elections and they don’t normally indicate how a General Election will go. If Johnson gets elected, God help us, he may give a bit of a bounce to the Tories in the inevitable subsequent election. Labour will probably do OK but won’t gain and may lose ground on the last election. And then Johnson, or whoever, will discover that Brexit is no more easy to resolve than it has been for the last few years. I suspect this misery is going to go on for some time…..
I haven’t finally decided….it takes a lot for a Labour Party member to go elsewhere having never voted otherwise in 50 years, except for one excellent Lib Dem local councillor who is a friend. Their position on Brexit is as pathetic as the leadership of Corbyn has been all along, who I have never been impressed with at all anyway, so I suspect when I get in the plywood booth with the stubby pencil on a string it will be Lib Dem and/or Green.
I understand the loyalty thing even though I don’t have it. But this is different. It’s Farage unless people vote tactically which in most cases that means LD. National elections is completely different of course, as with our shit voting system it makes no difference usually. But this is PR and it does make a difference. BTW the LDs are solid on the environment…
For information for Eu citizens turned away from voting today:
EU citizens denied a right to vote because your Euro Parliament form hasn't been processed -ask for the register to be corrected TODAY so you can vote. Returning officers can correct the register of voters down to 9 pm tonight!
They used a privatised (i.e. lowest bid for the licence to operate) courier service to deliver the postal voting papers to France I believe. The triumph of unfettered, market-led global capitalism.
Somebody commented on FB on the 23rd that they had been turned away from their local polling station because they didn’t bring the card with them. Someone else pointed out that the card is not necessary, a driving licence is sufficient. He returned later on and was not asked for any ID at all.
Where I live is one of the areas where they are trialling voter ID checks. I handed over my card and after they had checked it against the list they tore off the identifying part of the card (name, address etc.) and returned that bit to me with my voting slip.

If we have a General Election off the back of this they will be destroyed…as will the Conservatives.
