The interview with R Crumb where he talks about his obsession with music from his grandparent’s generation (over on the Crumb thread), got me thinking about how we rate music… so out of these, which are you?
1. Is contemporary music important to you? (Not just in itself, but also as a way to justify older music that you like)
2. Do you listen to music as way to experience other times & cultures?
3. Do you try to listen to music without positioning it in a time/culture?
I’m the 2nd, with a bit of #3. Easy… being as all music after say, 1985 (being generous) is utterly derivative, (except for rap and house-stuff which is crap)
I get the impression that most people here are #1. Am I wrong?
Being a Music Reviewer sounds like a job from hell to me. I’m far too backwards looking, with an anal collectors gene to boot.
