Anyone here in for the big box?

Forgot to mention that it’s out on Sept 6 (my birthday as it happens).
Resisted the urge to treat myself by factoring in the postage and import tax and decided to hang on and get the cheaper smaller boss from Amazon when it eventually comes out
eddie g says
Strange, because although I’ve gone along with the consensus that recognizes him as a major talent, I’ve never bought a Neil Young album. Not a one. Ever.
Guiri says
When younger I was convinced of his genius. I own everything up to Living with War, which is a lot. After that I realised I really didn’t like him anymore and hadn’t for a while. Don’t think I’ve listened to him in 15 years, let alone bought anything. Which is a relief considering how much he churns out.
H.P. Saucecraft says
His biggest career mistake was not dying young (after “Harvest” seemed an ideal opportunity). Much like Dylan in this respect.
Jaygee says
Dying young isn’t always a guarantee of artistic immortality though.
Can think of at least one NY contemporary who enjoyed similar levels of critical and commercial acclaim and died while still toppermost of the poppermost.
While Jim Croce may crop up on the odd soundtrack these days, he’s otherwise largely forgotten
Guiri says
I’ve certainly never knowingly heard Jim Croce. In fact I’m not sure that I’ve ever knowingly heard *of* Jim Croce before this.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Jim Croce’s biggest mistake was underachieving before dying. He should have hung in there for a while. I blame management.
Jaygee says
In the last two years of his life released several US top 10 singles and albums – a couple of each were No 1s and almost all of which achieved gold record status.
Released not long after his death, his last album and his record company’s subsequent cash-in compilation did equally well,
Not sure he would be still enjoying NY’s cachet had he lived but who knows?

H.P. Saucecraft says
He could have been the next Harry Chapin.
dai says
After Harvest is when he got really started
H.P. Saucecraft says
Buffalo Springfield is where he really got started.
deramdaze says
The more vast an act’s back catalogue expands, the smaller my collection of their CDs gets. I have four by NY, and ‘Decade’s ongoing presence on the shelf is looking very precarious.
dai says
Good to know.
deramdaze says
Agreed.

I listened to Neil’s “Psychedelic Pill” for the first time yesterday.
Goodness me, that first track just goes on and on and ON….
H.P. Saucecraft says
“It really ROCKS OUT, man! It ROCKS OUT!” – N.Young, sugaring the Pill.
dai says
It’s hardly Zuma or On the Beach or Rust Never Sleeps, but it is a decent album. Another long song Ramada Inn is a near masterpiece. Nothing from this era on Archives III though
retropath2 says
Is that Zuma re-visit yet available on cd? That’s what I want to know.
dai says
Over $600 Canadian. Content looks good especially the Blu-rays, but that’s too much for me. Is a cheaper version confirmed and will it contain all audio and visual content?
Jaygee says
Didn’t see any details on the site.
Would imagine follow release schedule and content policy on A1 and A2.
NY being NY, who knows
dai says
I didn’t see anything either. A1 was initially in 3 formats (CD, DVD, Blu-ray), I think the cheaper version was CDs only? Archives 2 was CD only, only difference was size of box, book etc I think. Naturally Neil won’t be consistent
Jaygee says
Resisted A1 to begin with, but having bought the CD A2 wider release eventually caved in got the big BluRay A1 on eBay.
Only available via the US, the postage and customs on the new set seem likely to run into three figures. Looking forward to buying the non-limited box P&P and duty-free box from AUK
fatima Xberg says
The Warner Bros. info describes two versions of »Archive III«:
• The Deluxe Box with 17 CDs, 5 BluRays, poster and a big 160-page hardcover book
• The CD Box with 17 CDs and a 32-page booklet.
I guess the CD Box will eventually be available through the usual channels in each country.
Johnb says
Now showing up on Amazon UK £272.99 for cd only version
dai says
All of it? Not really interested in CDs only as I already have quite a lot of that content
Jaygee says
More info -although not much – info about cheaper set here

dai says
Makes it clear, thanks.

300 Euro for the big box here:

dai says
Actually 261 Euro shipped to Canada after VAT taken off. Hmmm ….
Jaygee says
Cheers for sharing, D
As the Geffen years that presumably make up much of this set were arguably Neil’s artistic low point was considering waiting til the price dropped right down.
This looks a very good deal indeed
Leem says
On the Super Deluxe Edition website in one of the posts there are two discount codes listed. At the time of writing they can BOTH be used together on the NY site. I took the plunge and got at £267 of your English pounds. Cheaper than Amazon uk small box. (Which no doubt will fall). I appreciate VAT and duty can be a lottery. But hey (hey) it may come off and I suspect in my salad days I might regret not having took the plunge.
dai says
I saw that, would still come to 475CAD for me, as opposed to about 400 on jpc.de. I did try there, but my payment isn’t going through, did you try @jaygee ?
Jaygee says
Not yet.Am a bit tied up, having just got back from a quick trip to London to. see BS and TESB at Wembley last night. Terrible sound for the first half but great once the problems were ironed out from the solo songs onwards.
Will report back tomorrow am. In case you didn’t see it, there’s an English language option hidden near the top of the page which probably makes paying easier.
dai says
Lucky you! (apart from the sound)
I speak German so no issue there.
dai says
I managed to order it finally, but some of the Hoffmanites are saying jpc got it wrong and it can only be the CD set as the larger one is exclusive to the official store. I will email them to find out and naturally cancel if their description is incorrect
Jaygee says
They’re pretty precise about the contents and even provide track listings and/or content guides).
The one thing the German site does’t seem to mention is the couple of gew gaws (one of them being a “Neil Young pin”) included with the vastly more expensive Limited editions shipped from Neil’s aptly named “Greedy Hand” store.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Ooh! Ooh! Are there marbles? And mittens? Tell me there are marbles and mittens!
fatima Xberg says
JPC often make exclusive distribution deals for the German market (they’re bigger than Amazon in Germany, and still independent), so it’s quite possible that they’re shipping the Deluxe box (they’re including the BluRays in their description). In the past they had exclusive deals for some of the Deluxe versions of Steven Wilson albums (that otherwise were only available directly from the artist’s site).
The Warner press release describes the »pin« and the CD-sampler as exclusive to the Greedy Hand store.
Jaygee says
Incredibly user-unfriendly site.
Got all the way to submit twice (the second time having registered as a member/user) only to encounter the white screen of death and its endlessly spinning wheel.
If don’t hear back from them, am quite happy to hang on for the price on the CD-only version to drop to more realistic levels.
dai says
The email I got states this
“The limited edition Deluxe Edition of Archives Vol. III, available on September 6 exclusively at NeilYoungArchives.com, includes recordings and films together that show the unheralded sweep of Young’s efforts from the 1976-1987 period of his journey. It is one of the most extensive anthologies in his recorded”
I hope it is resolved, having to ship the wrong big box back to Germany is not something I particularly want to do
Jaygee says
The fact they are limiting purchasers to a maximum of three copies each implies they have quite a few of them.
They seem like a fairly reputable outlet so one would imagine they would be upfront about informing/warning punters that the sets were exclusively for sale in Germany.
Will let you know what they say when/if I hear back from them.
As mentioned in an earlier post, can’t see these flying off the shelves so quite happy to wait until the price plummets.
As for missing out on the Neil Young pin. I guess I’ll just have to wait for the Neil Young Decoder ring in Archives IV
dai says
They are good, have bought from them before. If it is the wrong version it is a genuine mistake
dai says
And a mistake it was, will cancel my order today. Sorry for confusion, but problem was at their end
fatima Xberg says
JPC have updated/corrected the description on their website – it is indeed the CD-only standard version that they’re selling.
(BTW, pre-orders there were always pretty safe: according to German law they only take your money once the goods are actually packaged & shipped; and you can cancel your order anytime until then)
dai says
No they took my money on Friday
Jaygee says
@Dai
They finally got back to me to say I’d registered for their site but said nothing about the set itself.
From what you say, it looks like the glitches with ordering off their website means I dodged a bullet there. Just as well really as I think buyers’ remorse would have set in by now.
Given that it’s six or seven weeks before release date, hope you don’t have any hassle getting a refund well before they ship.
retropath2 says
Under sales law, at least in the UK, if you make a mistake in the labelling, and some e buys in good faith, then it must be honoured. Especially if money parted with.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Can we also have Hoffman-style updates on “shipping”? That would be great.
Jaygee says
Say goodbye to CD and “vinly” shipping misery!

Re: Hoffman-style updates on “shipping”
My copy of Dave’s Picks Volume 44 has now been stuck at a US mail facility in North Carolina for a year and three-quarters. I’m beginning to give up hope of ever being able to listen to the 437th version of “Tennessee Jed” [joke].
H.P. Saucecraft says
Which Sonopress glass mastering did you order? I’ve A-B’d the 58212010 against the hadrer-to-find 58212016 and the artefacts at 10:42 Eyes Of The World are present in both. Have yet to hear 58212022 where they apparently resolved the issue by rolling off the top end.
dai says
Can’t reply any more above (on my phone) about jpc
I have messaged them saying description of the set has changed and I expect a refund. My confirmation email clearly states that it is the full set including 5 Blu-rays etc. I expect them to refund without any issues. If they don’t I will have to resort to other measures involving PayPal.
dai says
Just got an email (in German) explaining they were given false information from Warner’s about content and naturally they can reimburse.
So need to check out those discount codes for Greedy Hand US or Canada
Jaygee says
Did you manage to get the full box, D? Seemingly no longer be listed by Warners/GH according to someone over on SDE
Going to hang on until the price of the 17-CD drops bigly before I buy.
Also read on SDE that AIV will be the last volume. If this is true, the last box will have to cover a period of 40 years so God only knows how many discs there will be
dai says
As I explained jpc admitted that they did not have the big box for sale. My refund was processed within 5 minutes of asking for one. Excellent customer service.
As for Greedy Hand they have removed the use of discount codes on their US site, however you can still get 15% off on the Canadian one with CC24WMX15 , but even with that $644 CAD shipped is a little too much for me (by at least $250).
Will do the same as you and hang on for a discount on the regular version in the future (or buy downloads). Would like the Blu-rays, but the lack of them will probably not change my life too much.
I would suspect the meat of Archives IV will be his late 80s and 90s output (which was still mostly top quality), since 2000 he seems to have put out everything he records, If he hasn’t I can’t imagine there are many unreleased songs worth hearing based on what he generally thought was good enough for release at the time
Jaygee says
Well whaddaya know, another limited thing about Neil’s 22-disc A3 set is the sales
