Nonetheless, a quite astonishing drive from Hanoi to Manchester by way of a rather sandy bunker in Doha. The fairways and rough of Hoylake, Sandiway and Mere Golf & Country Club await.
Good afternoon. Encouraged by one of your number (with whom I have compared Wordle and Quordle scores for longer than seems completely normal) to join the fun, I wrote to the clubhouse yesterday for permission to step up to the tee and so am here (on approval). Once upon a time you could find me playing wholly indifferent chess under my pseudonym so I thought I’d keep it, being far too old either to think of or remember new things. Anyway, late to the first tee, but popped out a 3 yesterday (April 1st) and a lamentable 5 this morning – a birdie and a bogey leaving me evens for the month.
Casually, and also in passing: vaguely positive for Supertramp and RT; vaguely neutral for Del Amitri; vaguely negative for TS (a fine songstress, but not a fan of the anguished teenager schtick from a 35-year old).
Speaking as a Hard Man, I can’t understand why you would hobble yourself by not using letters you already know are right, even if they’re in the wrong place. But it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the results whether players use hard mode or not.
Easy mode can allow you to avoid the death spiral of trying and failing to guess the single missing letter in a word. But mostly makes no difference. Certainly less difference than sub-optimal shot selection.
As discussed previously, there is a school of thought which posits Hard is in fact Easier than Easy. I do Hard because in real life that’s what I am, Hard (and also not very good at Wordle). Who you looking at?
A Steward has just whispered in my ear “Whatever your friends are on, can I have some?” He also said he enjoyed it much better when there were bogeys, double bogeys and even failures. “It’s like they are all professionals, thank god you’re still here “
It’s going to be very tight, that’s for sure. In the first 5 rounds with 16 players we’ve had only 5 bogeys and one double bogey. The rest have been either birdies or pars with a smattering of eagles.
@mikethep could you explain the bogey terminology please? I suppose I could look it up on a golf page but I fear being inundated with ads for golfing paraphernalia as I’m afraid golf isn’t my cup of tee.
A bogey is one over par usually happens when youβve underclubbed with something like a mashy niblick instead of a spoon on a dog leg and you lay up just before the second cut and fail to get up and down with a bump and run..
Haha: you have it: the snows have melted. But it’s a false dawn, misplaced optimism, a flash in the pan, the solitary cuckoo which doesn’t make a summer, it’ll all be over by Christmas. A stanza or two later the poet continues “and soon it’s lifeless winter once more”. Birdie yesterday; bogey today.
I took a punt on it being an annoying word and I often use words that double up because it places the common letters you know quickly. It sometimes works. Could have been a 2 if Iβd gone with the more obvious one though. I rarely get 2βs.
I could have been clearer. I was trying not to make it a clue for anyone whoβd not done it, I knew one of the vowels but not in the right place. By going with a word with a double of it. I reckon itβs better to know where one letter is than to rule out another. And when there is a double of it, it looks like genius.
Don’t bother, nobody is interested in the scores, we’re all here just for the bonhomie, none of us are competitive or anything. Just friends mucking about
Statto here: the top five players all got either a 5 or a 6 today, there rest of the field got either a 4 or a 3. Jim’s still out there somewhere so he may spoil the symmetry, but something weird is going on…
You are RayX and I claim my Β£5. (No jealousy here, no sirree, just a hack wondering if he should use a Mashie Niblick or just say “this bunker is actually rather nice)
That makes me somewhat nervous for the morrow! Assuming that you didn’t mistakenly repeat failed letters, you tried out all but 5 letters of the alphabet.
Dull. Realised Iβm actually -4 having counted myself as 2 over on game 1028 instead of 1 over. Iβve sent a written apology to the competition secretary.

A bogey is one stroke over par (ie 4), a double bogey is two over par. I only know this from playing Wordle golf, mind you.
I think it’s when the ball unexpectedly sticks to the green.
As every hole is a par 4, it is impossible to get an albatross. If we achieve 3 under par, thatβs a hole in one.
A bogey is one over par usually happens when youβve underclubbed with something like a mashy niblick instead of a spoon on a dog leg and you lay up just before the second cut and fail to get up and down with a bump and run..

Got the rub of the green today, for a change.
You truly melted the snow
Haha: you have it: the snows have melted. But it’s a false dawn, misplaced optimism, a flash in the pan, the solitary cuckoo which doesn’t make a summer, it’ll all be over by Christmas. A stanza or two later the poet continues “and soon it’s lifeless winter once more”. Birdie yesterday; bogey today.
I think you’re missing a trick with your generic avatar…
Yikes. That’s a result under the circs…

I took a punt on it being an annoying word and I often use words that double up because it places the common letters you know quickly. It sometimes works. Could have been a 2 if Iβd gone with the more obvious one though. I rarely get 2βs.
It’s such a fine line between stupid and clever.
If only I knew what “I often use words that double up because it places the common letters you know quickly.” means….
I could have been clearer. I was trying not to make it a clue for anyone whoβd not done it, I knew one of the vowels but not in the right place. By going with a word with a double of it. I reckon itβs better to know where one letter is than to rule out another. And when there is a double of it, it looks like genius.
I may be overthinking it thoughβ¦
