Talking of offies, what’s happened to them all? There used to be one on just about every shopping parade – Unwins, Threshers, Wine Rack etc. Now the only so-called offies in Folkestone are corner shops – plus the supermarkets of course, which I suppose answers my question. Did this all happen when I was in Oz between 2014-2019?
My nearest Majestic is in Canterbury, 15m away, then Tenterden, 20m away, then, er, Calais…My nearest Oddbins is in Blackheath. Kent being Kent, there’s no shortage of posh wine merchants, but expensive. Good job I’ve signed up with Naked Wines then.
Now I’m walking around my neighbourhood – I’ve only been here 11 years, but discovering new paths, small green spaces, and shops – I find I have 2 Off Licences near me. One is a Bargain Booze with more Fosters, Carlig, and alcopops than anyone could ever need.
The other is a “proper” off licence – wide variety of beers and wines, overpriced spirits, and bagged snacks.
It was like being back in 1989. Especially when I spied Blue Nun and Black Tower at 3 quid a bottle
In Ontario until a couple of years ago you could only buy all kinds of alcohol at the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), beer could also be obtained at “The Beer Store”, also the Wine Rack sells only wine that comes from Ontario. It has now been opened up so that some supermarkets can sell beer, others also wine. In the current situation, it seems local craft beer brewers can deliver, which is useful. Prices are high though for all alcohol. LCBO and Beer Store have been deemed “essential”, but they are closing at 6pm.
Cross the provincial border to Quebec * and alcohol is sold pretty much everywhere and is cheaper.
* It is currently not allowed to cross the provincial border unless you have very good reason. Doing a beer run is probably not one of those, also one is not supposed to transport large quantities across the border.
Arf: a bit like the Malmo/Copenhagen interface, whereby thirsty swedes could cross the bridge into Denmark to top up when the official government outlets are closed. Now the bridge is closed.
I am lucky enough to have a specialist craft ale shop just around the corner from work, in Chasetown, hardly hipster elite and a decade away from any remote idea of gentrification. Largely mail order but a good open door off trade too. Expensive as fuck, of course, but he makes a living for as long as he can get supplies, which is dicey. But, yeah, most offies are corner shops that stay afloat thru sales of booze. Plus the execrable Bargain Booze.
We have a poncy place in town called The Beer Shop where they sell Elderflower Ale and Rose Petal Punk Urban lager etc. I was given a £20 voucher 2 years ago which I still have. My beard isn’t big enough.
I’m going to order a delivery from the local micro brewery here in Exmouth this week. Before you start imagining a tanker pulling up outside, they are doing ‘bag in a box’ beers at £20 for 5 litres or £35 for 10. I feel I should support the local as much as I can in these times. I read somewhere today that they are suggesting keeping pubs shut until Christmas…anyone else come across this?
There’s a pub in Belfast that’s been delivering Guinness on tap to customers for the past 11 days (I don’t drink Guinness myself) – until being stopped by police today, though what legislation is being used remains unknown:
I’m conflicted, on one hand it is my birthday*, on the other, I don’t drink…so
I guess I could have a pint of orange juice.

Happy birthday! 2 years and 3 weeks ahead of you.
Thanks @dai, but I meant it’s my birthday on the 15th May
Well consider it an early good wish.
Very kind. Thank you 😃
Got one, ta, whilst offies remain essential…..

Things like that give the police a bad name – arseholes.
No doubt some uptight teetotaller git made a complaint.
Where I live in Norway they haven’t all shut, just have to keep your distance. Cheers!
A beer in Norway? Only if you’re buying. I just wanted a pint, not to take out another mortgage.
Re: the price of alcoholic beverages in Norway.
Listen to Gatz on this point.
You can call me Al coz with an al it would be Oz opening the boozers up.
Uncharacteristically we will be well after a lot of countries.
