I was introduced to Periscope through a recent Rocking Vicar podcast. For the uninitiated, it’s an app from Twitter that allows you to watch and comment on live streams from anyone around the world. Your text come up on the screen of the person doing the filming and they often comment on what you’ve written.
It’s strangely fascinating and all very random. You’re never quite sure where you’re going to pop up. Yesterday I asked a Scottish man on a tuk tuk ride through Bangkok what he could smell as he travelled along (rotting veg and diesel), looked at an ornamental lamp in a Californian’s lounge as we bitched about the English weather (he’d lived in Canada and knew my pain) and asked a young chap in Florida if he liked Morrissey (he didn’t have a clue what I was talking about).
Anyone else used it yet?
Any thoughts on Periscope?
I downloaded it to this iPad earlier today. I find the lack of a search function, or at least a language filter, makes it more random and less fun than it could be (unless I just haven’t found them yet). Most of what I have seen today has been Turkish people gathered for family meals, which is pleasant but hardly earth shaking. Very early days for the app of course.
I used it yesterday to watch the view from the boundary interview on Test Match Special. It was pretty good quality and I think using it complimented the interview really well. It was nice to get a sense of the commentary box at TMS. Early days as Gatz says.
Last night I watched The who live in NYC, followed by The Stones in Columbus, Ohio. Was pretty much a waste of time once the original thrill of the technology wore off (in about 30 secs). Lack of a search engine makes it indeed random, but a complete waste of time washing through pointless crap to find anything of worth.
(And British weather in no way equates to that of the frozen north that is Canada).
