While the “big” clubs routinely hoover up the domestic trophies and top 4 the UEFA conference league is the only realistic opportunity for the rest. Very happy for West Ham absolutely fucking delighted for David Moyes.
I’m a very happy Hammer tonight. First half we looked nervous and we were outplayed. But we stuck at it and improved in the second half. Particularly pleased for Moyes, finally winning a significant trophy.
Try telling yourself that when your team has had 70% of the possession and 28 shots on goal to the opposition’s one only for your toothless rivals to score the only goal of the game from an unlucky deflection eight minutes into injury time.
Well yes, it’s obvious, but if you can’t put the ball in the net you won’t win games even if you have 90% possession and 25 corners to 1 or something. Couple of years ago Liverpool lost 6 home games in a row where they dominated all stats apart from goals scored. One defensive error normally proved crucial, but they didn’t deserve anything because the attack was so profligate.
I remember the Liverpool run well.
(so do a lot of fans of other clubs).
Pleased for Moyes, despite him managing our two biggest rivals. Like Harry Kane, it seems wrong to finish such a distinguised career without winning a trophy (and Scott Carson now has 2 Champions League winner medals).
I was thirteen and I was actually there! Will always have a soft spot for West Ham but I’m much more of a non league fan these days. Still great to see the Irons actually win something though. Had a bit of something in my eye thinking of my Dad and my Grandad going to games together in the 60s and my childhood love of the Brooking, Devonshire, Parkes, Stewart, Bonds, Martin and Pike era.
I wanted the Hammers to win but some of their fans were disgraceful last night and that seems to have been swept under the carpet by the London media (no surprise there). Had it have been the other way round all hell would have broke out.
Villa? Well, teams wearing claret and blue thrive in the Europa Conference League.
This season, West Ham won more matches in the Conference League (14) than in the Premier League (11)!
Spurs fan here and I’m delighted for them. I have a very non tribal view when it comes to football (with the obvious exception of the Woolwich Wanderers who seem to feel they are entitled to be above us), and always had a liking for West Ham as I grew up in NE London in the 50s/60s and many friends supported them. Didn’t realise it had been so long since they had won anything.
And another Spurs fan pleased to see West Ham do it – above all for Moyes who has always seemed one of the good guys. Seeing him with his Dad at the end was lovely.
SteveT is right about the fans though and I wonder what the repercussions will be. A Fiorentina player with a bleeding head wound is certainly going to be punished and I wonder if West Ham might lose ther European place next year. That would be tough on the players and on Moyes (if he is still there) but it looks like some serious sanction would be justified.
I’m not sure that either side really deserved to win but if I was neutral (which I’m not) I would have favoured the team that cheated less….. so all’s well that ends well!
Yep, really pleased about this and Moyes seems a good guy.
Manchester United fans – and it was fan-led – were stupid not to let his tenure at Old Trafford run its course. Showed disrespect for Ferguson who recommended him as his successor.
Happy Hammer here.
I was visiting Glasgow for work and the hotel TV had no sport channel so watched the BT Sport YouTube live stream on my phone.
The next day I was in taxi and the driver was a cockney from Newham. Both other passengers were very Hammers-friendly.
Almost wish I had found a pub showing the match because, according to the driver me both Rangers and Celtic fans have a soft spot for the Irons so could have been a good atmosphere.
Feel a bit sorry for the Italians though. Someone should sort out a compensation prize for them, like an Oscar for their early dives.

Congrats – genuinely happy for you guys. Definitely worth a celebration.

Score more goals than the opposition then it is deserved

The purpose of the game is to put the ball in the goal. It’s pretty important

Life long Hammer here. It’s only been a 58 year wait. I’m chuffed to bits.

Man Utd fan here and I was hoping West Ham Utd would win and I’m very happy that they have.
Now the ‘Noisy Neighbours’ are a dilemma. A part of me wants them to win on Saturday but that means winning the ‘Treble’ so maybe not.

Afterword Hammer here.
I was eighteen years old when Sir Trev’s diving header beat the Arsenal at Wembley.

Another Spurs fan. Pleased for the Hammers, and give them credit for showing more commitment to the competition than ours did in 2021-22.

I’d expect there might be a ban on fans at an away game or two when we play in the Europa League next season. Maybe even a home game or two.
