Whale carcasses are an issue, because if they try to bury them on the beach, as was done in the past, they keep leaching out shark-attracting oils for years.
The other option, of course, is to coat the entire environs with putrid, decomposing whale flesh. Results vary.
Thanks Junior and Podicle. This thread has made my day
The extraordinary saga of the exploding whale was in a class of its own.
It’s a movie just waiting to be made. The reporter did a great job. So many priceless quotes.
“The remaining chunks were of such a size, that no respectable seagull would tackle it anyway”
Just when you think it’s safe to go back in the water, we can rely on Afterword Australia to come up with a new horror story.
I forgot the third method of whale removal, which is to lift the swollen, gasified whale carcass onto a flat bed truck and tow it through a crowded urban centre. What could go wrong?
Great stuff @Podicle.
You are clearly an expert in the field of bizarre whale carcass catastrophes.
Many thanks!
And yet they never ask me when these things happen?
I note that they carted the recent one off to landfill and warned nearby residents that there may be ‘some temporary odours’. Given that bystanders in the Taiwan incident reported that they smelled the truck several minutes before it arrived, I’m guessing a few weeks of whiffage is guaranteed.
Or chop tow it out to sea and let sharks eat it out there.
Makes sense to me.
They have a habit of returning to shore unless towed half way to New Zealand.
I saw an orca the other day. It emerged slowly like a submarine – its dorsal fin first and then the long black body. The day before, dolphins were frolicking around too. In three years of daily dog walking on the same beach, these were the only times I’d seen anything like that.
