Obituary
I’m more saddened than I would have expected to hear of the death on Anthony Head, gone at the age of 72 from complications of pneumonia. His partner of decades died last December and I can’t help speculate that this might have led to him lacking to will to fight his own illness.
He always exuded an easy going charm combined with enviable good looks, and remembrances from those who knew him all confirm that he was as much a pleasure to meet and work with as you would hope. I never did either of course, and only knew him from coffee ads, Little Britain and, of course, his role a Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (a programme which I insist belongs in the very top tier of long form television).

Too soon. As for Buffy (and his role in it), completely agree it’s amongst the finest of all TV series.
It’s been a traumatic year in the Buffyverse – Michelle Trachtenberg, Nicholas Brendon and now Tony. Reading many of the tribute comments on Facebook, a lot of teens at the time looked upon Giles as a surrogate dad – wise, reassuring but with an undercurrent of cool and danger.
SMG’s tribute is heartbreaking in its simplicity.
There are so many highlights of Tony’s years on Buffy – here’s just a few:
Buffy was one of the (very) few programmes which united our household when the girls were young teenagers, a big achievement in retrospect.
Sorry to hear this news.
I didn’t realise until reading his obit that he’s Murray Head’s younger brother.
Say it ain’t so.
Yes me too; had never made the connection until I read the obit today.
A revelation here too …
I liked him. He was one of the chorus of singers on the first Red Box album, an unrecognised classic in my opinion.
Very sad loss. The comments from those who knew and worked with him do suggest he was genuinely one of the good guys.
We’re working our way through Ted Lasso at the moment (yes, I know, late to the party) and he is wonderful as the evil football club owner Rupert. He also looks like he’s enjoying every second of it.
In some sort of serendipity, in series 2 he becomes the owner of West Ham whose real owner, pornographer David Sullivan has stepped down today due to imminent revelations about past misconduct.
