Umm .. was this down to Boris / Foreign Office intrevention or Iranian new year traditions of clemency and forgiveness?
Promising to pay an outstanding 40 year debt might be a factor too.
Indeed. I now await him braying about what a marvellous job they’ve done to get her released, whilst ignoring the fact she’d have been out much sooner if had he kept his fat gob shut. Yes, I will be shouting at the radio again.
Ditto the “Covid vaccinations by the UK Govt* have saved 100,000 lives”. A shame about the 100,000+ lives lost beforehand, though, innit Bozzer?
In terms of Covid, its interesting to see how outcomes have panned out over time, at least in terms of deaths per million. As we know, most of the Nordic countries have fared well, the Eastern European countries the worst. The Netherlands, Germany, Ireland are grouped together someway behind the UK. The UK is just behind ( i.e. fewer deaths per million) Belgium, Greece and Italy and just ahead of France, Spain and Portugal.
My inner cynic says wait till she steps off the plane in the UK.
Nothing to do with the old arms deal debt, both governments agree, but Boris has said that the debt will be paid.
I’m amazed anyone believes anything Boris says anymore. It’s also worth pointing out that the poor woman served the whole sentence given to her. Not much for the fat controller to crow about there. What chance a photo opportunity at No 10?
There are over 500 million reasons why her coming home is to be celebrated. Bastards and incompetents on both sides, one woman and her family in the middle. What showers of shit our leaders are.
And now Morad Tahbaz (who was left behind when the two ladies came home) looks like he’s going to be released too.
Whatever else is going on, and whatever the reasons behind why they were imprisoned, this is a bit of good news. Which is what I was trying to focus on.

About time and shame on both governments for diplomatic point-scoring for the last six years.

It was down to Boris’s intervention that she had her sentence increased. Fuckwit.

Belgium’s count includes presumed covid and excess deaths, so is higher on a technicality

And – according to what I heard on the wireless last week (on More Or Less?) – the UK official tally is roughly half to a third of the true total.
How that compares to the RoW’s official figures, and the whole-world excess, we’ll probably never know. Not for decades, anyhow.

If Liz Truss did anything concrete to allow this, then she gets some leeway from me in case of future cheeeeese negotiations.

Thank you. That wasn’t so hard, was it? 🙂
