We have had several discussions here over the last few years re mp3 players. Like many I’m still a bit lost after my iPod Classic died (ok I dropped it) last year and have tried a few alternatives both for listening on the go and as a backup of my library (about 180gb but growing quite quickly). Tried the Fiio – but found it too fiddly (and mine failed – without being dropped). Currently use Sony walkman – better interface but not quite enough space. I switched mobile phone to iPhone 5 a couple of years ago while my in-house tech experts were home for the holidays and use it for my “current listening”. Now I notice (slow on the uptake as usual) that you can get iPhone7 with 250Gb which capacity would probably suit me when my current contract comes up for renewal/upgrade. Anyone here use one? Are the earbuds any good? Other wireless headphones to recommend?

I tend not to be bothered about capacity as I use Apple Music and feel no need to carry the music around on the actual phone, but of course that’s dependent on your 4G data coverage and plan.
I have an iPhone 7 and it’s absolutely great. Couldn’t wish for anything different.
The earbuds are cack. Can’t help you with wireless ones, I’m afraid. I use my Sennheisers with the adapter.
I too don’t have a need for a huge capacity MP3 player. Spotify (and its offline playlist facility) means I can have as much music with me as I need on my 16Gb phone.
How do you listen to music if you’re out of service, e.g. on an underground? Does it store it somehow? Or is the answer that you don’t?
Agreed. I may sneer at vinyl consumer fetishists but I still prefer to own an actual thing and like to be able to listen without being connected to anything else.
Apple Music allows you to download if necessary. It’s fine.
I just like to think that if I walk away from them (has been known) I can start again somewhere else – thats what happened with Creative who never recovered from my huff.
But you can. You’d just sign up to another streaming service (e.g. Spotify).
I used to be all about the owning, but since I moved to AM I’ve not even noticed it. It becomes your new normal very quickly.
The earbuds that are supplied with any smartphone are generally crap. That’s their preferred place to cut a corner and keep the price looking somewhere near reasonable.
Yes, and the last ones I got with the device were the hard plastic type that kept falling out of my ears.And if you lose one of the apple ones presumably you need to buy another pair?
Have you still got your iPod Classic? This crowd have repaired several of mine very successfully. They also seem to do an increase on memory up to 512GB, but there’s some sort of disclaimer with a limit on iTunes, so not sure exactly how that part works.

no I sold it as broken for spares on ebay last year – £45. Got surprising amounts for cases and cables etc.

I could get my old 4th gen 60GB iPod fixed (hard drive is kaput, Possibly battery also). Then I’d have 3 iPods! But still only 2 ears.
I used them to increase the capacity of my iPod after the battery failed, but I had loads of problems. As I reduce the size of all my tracks to 128kbps I thought I would be able to get loads of tracks on my iPod with 256gb of memory, but there is a maximum amount of tracks that the iTunes firmware can handle, apparently, although this was not explained beforehand. As I unknowingly kept trying to go past this figure (I can’t remember the figure, but it was around 48,000 tracks) the iPod kept crashing.
I ended up sending it back to them 4 or 5 times till we got to the bottom of it. Ultimately the iPod was beyond fixing, but they gave me my money back and I flogged it for parts (for a surprisingly good price) and bought a refurbished one off eBay that works as good as new. Didn’t bother going above 160gb though, as there’s not really much point having a souped up iPod where you can’t actually use the last 40gb of memory.
Another AM subscriber here. It ain’t no ‘Rdio’ (RIP) but it suits me just fine.

Much cheaper than an iPhone and really well reviewed. My son has one and I’m seriously considering it for my next phone. It’s the same size as an iPhone Plus and has a regular mini jack for headphones.
BTW, if you want to use an iPhone as a back up for music, I’m pretty sure you need third party software to get the music off the phone again.
