If you still want more lists – here’s my very own Year-End-Best-Of-2025 list.
I’m no fan of ratings of any kind – and it changes every day of course – so each category has a winner (•••) and everything is sorted alphabetically. The winner isn’t necessarily »The Best«, but certainly the most played here.

It was of course grumpy old Phillip Boa who did the unmentionable – not only did he remix/rework one of his most famous albums (produced by Tony Visconti, no less), he also changed the tracklisting. All with help from longtime producer Eroc, so it all sounds magnificent – and it comes with tons of outtakes, B-sides and a complete concert in East Berlin.

Although the Frankie box is mistitled (it didn‘t do justice to the grandeur of the album with half of the artwork and the sleeve notes missing), it still provides a perfect picture of their first year of singles – who would have thought that a 60 minute disc of »Relax« mixes would be so much fun? Which can’t be said of John & Yoko‘s »wimmin« box (as it‘s called in our household); hours and hours of dreary Dad rock that even a Zappa cameo can’t rescue – but it‘s fascinating to explore the contents and look (and listen) closely at their New York era. Advice: play the nine discs in reverse order!

This Is what a big fat box set is supposed to be – multiple discs that you can explore, dip into now and again, and plenty of opportunities to create your own alternative albums and playlists (e.g. the »Fool‘s Mate/Nadir« double album or the »Solo Acoustic Tull«). And as for the Bowie box – no, I don‘t think the design is »cheap«; it‘s perfectly appropriate (would you prefer to have one of those brightly coloured AI graphics with embossed logos and glimmer effects??). Best of the era boxes in my opinion.

Huzzah!
Nice to see the Hedvig Mollestad Trio appearing on someone else’s list.
Brilliant – I am now going to check out Balkan Voodoo Village – sounds intriguing.
I was curious about that too @steveT,
And they do sound very promising.
Here”s some background..

They are on the excellent ASPHALT TANGO label. Based in Berlin, who have a fantastic catalogue of Balkan releases.

Well worth exploring.
Mmmm…nice…
Now there is a gaggle of lists that really make keen to go and listen to stuff.
I love your delightfully eccentric categories which add to my curiosity.
Splendidly eclectic.
Marvellous!
You should post more often. What a splendid compendium of recommendations!
I am very keen to explore all your favourites, @fatima-xberg, so I’ve made a playlist.
Amadou and Mariam’s album sounds excellent.
A poignant release as Amadou passed away last year, only 70 years old. A very sad loss.

Alison Krauss is in very good voice on her new album. And what a fine band she has,
And not forgetting the fabulous Marty Stuart:
So much to listen to.
Your list is a real treasure trove of favourites old and new @fatima-xberg.
Jean-Claude Vannier and his Mandolin Orchestra are another real find. Magnificently eccentric.
Here’s a track from his Brassens album.
That Marty Stuart clip is 🔥
The inclusion of an album by a band on the ASPHALT TANGO label made me suspect that there must be a certain Berlinish flavour to your list.
Which is how it should be.
And then there’s that boxset by Philip Boa and the Voodooclub.
I’ve never heard of Herr Boa and I suspect I am not alone.
But that is great. I want to hear about local heroes.
In the same way, The Best of 2025 by @DuCo01, has a slightly Stockholm feeling.
James Yorkston and Mattias Eick both played stupendous concerts here last year. No surprise to find them high on the Duke’s list.
«I’ve never heard of Herr Boa and I suspect I am not alone…»
Phillip Boa has been making great albums since the early 1980s. A lot of his work was produced and overseen by Krautrock legend and sound wizard Eroc, and he made several albums with Tony Visconti and other internationally-known producers.
Shame on me for not knowing anything about Philip Boa.
According to Wiki, he made quite an impact in the UK.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_Boa_and_the_Voodooclub
NME readers would have certainly known who he was.
Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub is one of a few German bands that has reached international fame and recognition by critics and fans.[10] To this day, they are the German band that has achieved the most “Albums of the week” and “Single of the week” in the British music press (8 x “Single of the week” and 5 x “Album of the week” in NME, Melody Maker and Sounds). Phillip Boa was in the top 20 of the list “Made in Germany – The Most Influential German musicians” (on laut.de)[11] Furthermore, he stands as a sharp observer of society and a distinguished songwriter in Germany. NME described his work as being of “a cynical-poetic view, full of mysterious metaphors and sharp wisdom”.[
I found this interview with him with these useful notes
Phillip Boa and the Voodoo Club are genuine legends of the German music scene. Emerging in the mid 80s, their mix of British post punk with a genuine German twist created a perfect hybrid that saw them score many top ten German albums to this day. These days Phillip is the soul of German underground music who creates on his own terms and yet still resonates with a huge audience who are seeking something more from music. his blend of melancholy, melody and euphoria makes an enthralling hybrid, and his lyrics full of mystery and observation add to the mix.
He rarely gives interviews so it was great to have this conversation with him.
Philip’s comments about working with Jaki Liebezeit of Can are very interesting.
Another interesting discovery from FATIMA’S TREASURE TROVE. Yasmine Hamdam, (Arabic: ياسمين حمدان; born 1976) a Lebanese singer and songwriter, now based in Paris.
She has had a long and interesting career which started in BEIRUT with the duo SOAPKILLS in 1999, She’s a prog icon in the Arab music world.

I’d be very surprised if @salwarpe has not heard of her.
Here’s a TINY DESK SESSION from 10 years ago.
As well as singing, she has worked as an actor with Jim Jarmusch.
Indeed – second on my list of a beginner’s guide to Arabic music
Another album which got me interested was Vermilion Hours by pianist and composer Melaine Dalibert and David Sylvain.
Here’s some background…
https://acloserlisten.com/2025/06/27/melaine-dalibert-david-sylvian-vermilion-hours/
I suspect Merlaine would appeal to @DuCo01 and others of an ambient persuasion.
Interesting chap….

There is something very soothing nd harmonious about his music.
