Or somebody who makes a living despite hip kids dismissing them with “OK, [Baby Boomer].” I like Rick Beato, but sometimes he chooses the wrong targets and hence can come across as bit out of touch.
Good on them for ploughing their own peculiar furrow and finding success, but their music is not for me. I need to hear more instruments than just a guitar and stop-start drums.
Also – and I admit this is completely superficial and shallow – I can’t bear their costumes. My eyes don’t like the black and white polka dots, and the long noses remind me of Noseybonk from the 1980s show Jigsaw, who terrified me as a child. I doubt he means anything to two young people from Quebec, but I’m reminded of him every time I see them, particularly the guitarist. *Shivers*
I’d never heard of Noseybonk so I had to investigate.
I’m not surprised that kids got scared. The Chains episode makes me think of the Pied Piper of Hamlin with a smidgeon of Wickerman. Which school in the world has a lesson about CHAINS and then turns a blind eye to a whole class disappearing into the park to go line dancing with a very dodgy type?
They’re having a moment in the UK (and played in London the other week). I’m glad they add to the gaity of nations but what I’ve heard so far leaves me cold.
I think they are great – have the 2 albums on order.
They are building up a head of steam in Uk. I concede however that they will need to broaden their palette to have any longevity.
I think they’re a hoot and a half! I have the first album, I’ll be buying the second – and the live clips I’ve seen on YT make me grin and chuckle. If they’re confusing or annoying journalists, then that’s a bonus!
Incredible stuff, the music is impressive even without considering how it’s done and presented. The Dada aspect of it makes it even more up my street. Andertons music have just produced a guitar in conjunction with PJD guitars in York, with the microtonal frets. I think it’s a sudden shift in music that will have lasting impact, perhaps in encouraging originality and performance art, rather than music by numbers.
It’s quite similar to Fripp’s League of Gentlemen, which is absolutely unexpected. I thought that had been lost to history… but a couple of years after it was reissued, along come these two…
I was playing badminton with my daughter*in the square outside our house the other week, with the usual peripheral bench sitters (drunks, dopeheads, students, young parents, ) and there was as usual a boombox in one corner. Rather than the normal Turkish rap, this was something rather stranger and beat-driven. I Shazamed it as the more it played, the more appealing it became. When i looked later, the two tracks were Angine de Poitrine – Fabienk and Mata Zyklek.
Hmmm. Music like this has ben around for ever. I don’t get how all it took to get a wider audience was the band dressing up in polka dot Mr Men costumes.
Haven’t seen too many duos with one playing drums and the other doing both bass and guitar with 2 necks. Then there’s the microtonal thing. But I don’t get out much these days
They come from a region called Saguenay in Quebec, about 3 hours north of Quebec City, this is about as French as you can get here, my ex’s family were from that area so I have spent some time there. You would hardly believe that English is also an official Canadian language when visiting. Aspiring Anglophone politicians are sent there to learn French on crash courses, staying with local families. Being bilingual is essential if you want to go far. If any English is heard during the course you are in big trouble! Beautiful area, but long long winters, sometimes not possible to get there in severe weather
Oh, I love them. Have the two album bundle downloaded from Bandcamp. I was prompted by someone on Bluesky who linked to the KEXP session.
I have no fear of doublenecks, whimsy, nor tricksy time signatures; those in King Crimson’s Discipline track read like a set of Imperial spanner sizes.
I imagine Professional Boomer Rick Beato doesn’t approve
What’s a professional Boomer?
A demolitions expert.
Or somebody who makes a living despite hip kids dismissing them with “OK, [Baby Boomer].” I like Rick Beato, but sometimes he chooses the wrong targets and hence can come across as bit out of touch.
Fred Dibnah?
Well if you watch the video you will see that he does approve
All for prog-psychedelic type sounds being ‘down with the kids’, and music journalists being less sneery.
Huzzah!
I think they need to add a “keyboard wizard”, mind.

Noseybonk used to give me the shivers, too.

Excellent clip @Leffe.Gin.
Very useful description of what microtonal guitars are all about-
Are children in the UK allowed to watch clips like this in the UK?
Talk about an effective deterrent to put them off parenthood.
Good luck to them.
They don’t do anything for me and I’ve listened to both albums.
They need a gimmick.
I’ve enjoyed both albums and am very much looking forward to seeing them at End Of The Road festival in September.
I don’t like them much personally, but I appreciate that they’re doing something a bit different.
interesting article here

Super, thanks for that.

So they pass the test for me.
So good, they get two threads in 3 months
Up to a point, Lord Copper: the other thread developed into a discourse on Mr Fripp’s League of Gentlemen – this one has stayed on track!
Show me an Afterword thread that doesn’t. It’s like Godwin’s Law. Sooner or later, prog will be mentioned.
Anyway, this gives me a chance to suggest you Google the band’s name for a polka dot surprise.
Haha well that’s proof that something very strange is happening out there in wherever it is that this stuff happens.
Good gracious!

Me neither – I can’t think of too many directly comparable bands…
The only one is La Poesse. Who in fact are/were the same people but without costumes…! There’s an album out there.
I think the game is that you don’t say who they actually are
Zoinks!
Is it a bit like Daft Punk? We know who they are, but we’re not saying.
Might be worth reading the article linked by @Gardener above…
