Obituary
He was 76. I remember listening to him a lot when he had the pre Peel 8-10 spot on Radio 1. Moved to lunchtime after that I think. Of course he will mostly be remembered for his in depth interview with John Lennon (and Yoko) just 2 days before his murder.
Serendipitously, I’ve just finished a biography of McCartney which naturally touches on the aftermath of Lennon’s death and features Peebles’ recollections and subsequent reflections. The whole thing seemed/seems to have left significant psychological scars with him throughout the rest of his life.
Sad news in every sense.
Obvious, I suppose, that scars remained with him. But why? Not for me to know, I suppose.
Anyway, he loved cricket and I can’t wait for the cricket season. R.I.P.
I liked him and the stuff he played.
Plus I have a soft spot in that he did the introductions to the band on 10 CC’s Live and Let Live . “Hit albums, hit singles that you all know about but tonight something very special, a live recording…”
Excellent obit today… 80% of which was about his interview with John & Yoko… I guess that answers my question above… he was defined by it.
Loved the bit where he, John and Yoko were at the top of the stairs of a Chinese Restaurant, and John whispers in his ear, ‘They’re all looking at you Andrew!’
Also, Yoko remained close until he left the BBC in 1991.
Why? Well for me, the BBC represents this country at its best… maybe for Yoko too.
