Such a shame. Apparently he was only 61, which is no age at all.
I first saw him playing Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, and couldn’t warm to his character as he came across as quite abrasive (although his acting was terrific). Then I noticed him in some great films, like Glory, Primal Fear, and The Mist, where I still couldn’t take to him.
But then I watched him as Captain Holt in Brooklyn 99, where practically every line he has makes me laugh. His character is terrific, but it’s his deadpan delivery that makes the lines so good.
Here’s a compilation that showcases some of Holt’s best bits.
I particularly like the running gag about his hatred of the deputy chief. For example: “Captain Wunsch, good to see you… But if you’re here, who’s guarding Hades?” And “Ah, Captain Wunsch. I wondered why all the birds had stopped singing.”
I thought he was excellent in Homicide. Probably not someone you’d want to work with, but as a character in a TV drama he made a great contribution to the mix.
In Homicide he came across as a very intense actor, but had the most incredible scene when Pembleton had his stroke, showing him trapped in a box, his thoughts flying around, but unable to communicate. The following series showed his character recovering, slurring his words,, but still smarter than the other detectives. It’s another sad loss.

Such a shame. Would have hoped he’d have another 30 years of yoks in him.

A sad loss. Our whole house loved B99 and Captain Holt was the absolute heart of the show.
